King Charles Ex-Butler Finally Addresses William and Kate's AI Photo Scandal
The photograph appeared to show the royal couple embracing affectionately on royal grounds.
Noted former butler among royal fans, Grant Harrold, was forced to issue a lengthy public clarification after sharing what many social media users assumed was an AI-generated image of Prince William and Princess Kate. The photograph appeared to show the royal couple embracing affectionately, and it instantly led to major debates online. Harrold had posted it alongside a nostalgic caption while saying it was taken during his early years working for the family.
Harrold, who previously worked for then-Prince Charles at Highgrove, captioned the image and shared it on Instagram, saying, “This wonderful photo of the Prince and Princess of Wales was taken when I first met them back in 2004. A true royal love story.” The post gained even more engagement after renowned royal journalist Katie Nicholl reshared it and commented, “Love this!” However, online reactions quickly shifted from admiration to suspicion, with several royal watchers questioning whether the image was genuine at all. In the comments section, one person asked, “Oh wow, is it real or AI?” while another joked, “I don’t even know what’s real anymore.” Still, others defended the image’s sentimental value, with one supporter writing: “A lovely photo of a young couple in love in the most natural way. They look so calm and content. Thank you for sharing.”
As speculation began to intensify, Harrold made an attempt to address concerns directly through an Instagram Story. His post said, “After reading a few comments, I would like to reiterate that I did not take or own this image.” He continued, “It is how I remember them in my early years in the Royal Household.” According to GB News, the backlash ultimately led Harrold’s representatives to issue a far more detailed statement on his behalf, clarifying that he had not intentionally shared misleading content and genuinely believed the image to be authentic when he posted it.
“It has come to my attention that the authenticity of a recent image I shared has been questioned as AI,” Harrold said in the statement shared with the outlet. He continued, “I love sharing my experiences and memories of working with the royal family, and I strive for my content to be a reflection of the great years I spent as part of the household.” While providing further clarification, he added, “I genuinely mistook this to be an authentic image of the pair. On seeing it, it made me smile, and I wanted to share this joy with you.” The ex-butler also acknowledged how difficult AI-generated images are becoming to identify, adding with a touch of humor, “While I may be adept at telling my dinner knife from my butter knife, AI, as I'm sure you can all agree, can be harder to detect.”
The controversy has once again highlighted growing concerns around AI imagery and misinformation online. Things tend to get out of hand when public figures and historical moments are involved. William and Kate’s romance first came into the public eye in 2004 after photographs surfaced of the pair skiing together in Switzerland. It was the same year Harrold began working for King Charles at Highgrove. Since leaving royal service in 2011 following allegations of unfair dismissal and workplace bullying, Harrold has remained a regular television commentator on royal affairs. But as of now, the former butler finds himself caught in the increasingly blurred line between nostalgia and artificial intelligence.
