King Charles’ Apology to Prince Harry Reemerges After Private Family Reunion
In his memoir, Prince Harry revealed an emotional moment with King Charles years before he left the UK.
When Prince Harry released his memoir, Spare, it was instantly branded a bombshell. The autobiography was filled with controversial revelations about the royal family; however, amidst the avalanche of tabloid gossip, the sweet and tender moments Harry shared were largely overlooked. The Duke of Sussex wrote deeply about his relationship with his father, King Charles, and public attention has turned back to those early years—when Harry was just his Pa’s “darling boy”—following the father-son duo's private family reunion earlier this month.
It is no secret that the Duke sought medical help for his mental health. He frequently experienced panic attacks and anxiety, which prompted Charles to refer him to a specialist. Recalling a particularly moving discussion with his father, Harry wrote, “Over dinner one night at Highgrove, Pa and I spoke at some length about what I’d been suffering.” The conversation became so deeply emotional for the then-Prince of Wales that he was overcome with feeling and apologized to his son.
Harry wrote, “I gave him the particulars, told him story after story. Towards the end of the meal, he looked down at his plate and said softly, I suppose it’s my fault. I should’ve got you the help you needed years ago. I assured him that it wasn’t his fault. But I appreciated the apology.” At the time, little did the father and son know that they would face many more battles ahead.
Harry’s relationship with the royal family deteriorated significantly after he left the UK with his wife, Meghan Markle, and relocated to the US. The couple went on to level harsh criticism against the firm through an explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey, their Netflix docuseries, and, of course, Spare. While royal fans hoped Harry would mend fences with Charles and Prince William, the rift only seemed to widen. However, the Duke has expressed his desire to reconcile with his family, telling the BBC in 2025, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight any more; life is precious.” He further added that although there were “so many disagreements” between him and his family, he had “forgiven” them.
At the time, the monarch was reportedly not speaking to Harry due to his legal battle for automatic police protection in the UK. However, it truly appears that the duo has turned a corner in their relationship. They recently reunited at Highgrove, the King’s private estate, for a “private family occasion." Meghan Markle was also present, alongside Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, who served as the catalysts for the gathering. Held entirely away from cameras and the media, the meeting allowed the family to connect completely out of the public eye.
While Harry and Charles seem to have taken the first step towards reconciliation, the Duke is still estranged from William. The now-Prince of Wales was busy with work when his younger brother visited the UK this month and did not meet him.
