Kate Wasn't the Only Royal at Wimbledon This Week — They Had More Than the Sport in Common
Kate Middleton had stunned fans when she arrived at Wimbledon last week, now another royal has made their way to the Grand Slam.
After Kate Middleton’s triumphant visit to Wimbledon last week, the Grand Slam saw another royal presence on Wednesday, and it was none other than Queen Camilla. During both of their appearances, their fondness for the color blue was evident. The Princess of Wales broke her tradition of wearing dresses to the grass court by opting for a blue blazer and matching trousers. On the other hand, the Queen Consort chose a turquoise blue chiffon dress for the occasion. She paired the look with blue earrings, a pendant, and white pumps. The royal was also seen carrying a large white hat.
Camilla smiled as she walked into the Players’ Arena next to the Center Court. She met with the ball girls and ball boys, who are an essential part of Wimbledon. She also met with former British No. 1 Heather Watson, as well as Morag Ranford, who has spent 50 years working in the Grand Slam’s press operations team, and Pete Dobson, a long-standing safety officer who is retiring after this year’s tournament. Much like Middleton, Camilla also undertook a cause close to her heart. She met with members of City Harvest, a charity that helps tackle food waste, and its delivery truck, Vandy Murray, which is clearly an amusing take on British tennis icon Andy Murray’s name.
The Queen Consort was later joined by her sister, Annabel Elliot, to watch British wildcard Arthur Fery’s quarter-final match against Italy’s Flavio Cobolli from the royal box. Peter Phillips and Harriet Phillips were present at the court to catch the high-stakes match. Last week, the Princess of Wales had also watched Fery’s Round 2 game against Otto Virtanen of Finland at Court 18. It seems that the bright tennis player has caught the royal attention.
The royals are a highly competitive bunch, and that is clear from their reactions at Royal Ascot every year. Even the most senior royals lost their composure after the gunshot. Similarly, last week, the thrill, panic, happiness, and disappointment of watching sports were visible on Middleton’s face when she attended two games, alongside stalwarts like Murray, Debbie Jevans, Tim Henman, and Anne Keothavong. While Fery had won his round against Virtanen, British star Katie Swan had lost her second-round match against Madison Keys of the US. Swan was the last Ladies' Singles player to bow out of the Grand Slam.
Camilla looked equally tense as she fanned herself with an elegant hand fan in the royal box. Fery is the only British player left in the Men’s Singles category. The Queen Consort was joined by the likes of Jevans, actress Elle Fanning, TV adventurer Bear Grylls, and English cricket star Joe Root, among others. King Charles’ on-screen version, Dominic West, was also in attendance.
The Wimbledon finals will take place this weekend, and the thrill of who will make it and who won’t would obviously be at an all-time high. Middleton is expected to attend the Ladies’ and Men’s Singles finals, and royal fans would certainly hope that she will be joined by her kids. This year, all eyes will be on Prince Louis’ Wimbledon debut.
