Kate Middleton Welcomed With Flowers and 'Ciao Kate' Placards by Italian Fans
Royal fans crowded the streets of Reggio Emilia to make Kate Middleton's landmark international tour special, and she returned the love.
Kate Middleton had not made any international trip on her own since she was diagnosed with cancer. But she recently landed in Italy without Prince William, marking a triumphant return to the global scene after an arduous two years of personal health struggles. When the two-day trip to Italy was announced last week, the royal fans heaved a sigh of relief as the announcement revealed something more than just an overseas royal tour. It was a clear sign that the beloved Princess of Wales was now finally on the better part of recovery, and she is fit enough to undertake a stressful international tour.
Royal family fans didn’t skip a beat in spilling their joy all over the streets of Reggio Emilia as they gathered in numbers to catch a glimpse of Middleton. When the popular princess stepped out at Piazza Camillo Prampolini, she was greeted with excited crowds who had brought along goodies to present to the princess on her first day of the tour. They held up colorful signs of ‘Ciao Kate’ to welcome her and even carried Union Jacks in her honor. The ever-graceful Princess of Wales didn’t let them down. Sporting a striking blue powersuit by Edeline Lee, Middleton made it a point to make the fans feel just as special, going as far as even breaking royal protocols for them.
There is a reason why Middleton is a fan favorite, and she proved it yet again as she greeted the gathered crowds. Fashioning her famous royal walkabout charm, she chatted with onlookers and accepted the flower bouquets they had brought for her. In her signature move, she crouched down to talk to children as well. Although royals are ideally not supposed to hug fans or click selfies with them, the 44-year-old was spotted embracing a woman and taking selfies with the fans gathered at Piazza Camillo Prompolini.
Middleton planned the Italy trip for an important cause that has been close to her heart. She is there to learn about Reggio Emilia’s philosophy about early childhood development, often called ‘the Reggio Emilia approach’. The mother-of-three has had an interest in early childhood studies for many years, but her trip to Italy is also a significant marker that the future queen of England is not only ready to push the envelope on early childhood research, but also to put the international spotlight on the subject.
Middleton first met Reggio Emilia’s mayor, Marco Massari, before heading to the Town Hall to talk to women, such as Carla Nironi, Iona Bartoli, and Eletta Bertani, who shaped the Reggio Emilia approach.
Every royal tour always receives a certain level of significance and curiosity, but when Middleton announced her tour to Italy last week, it gained attention for a completely different reason. It not only marked her first international work trip since 2022 but also her maiden overseas visit since her 2024 cancer diagnosis. Fans across the world will certainly be hoping for it to be the first of many.
