Kate Middleton Turned to One Family Member for Her Cancer Speech— and It Wasn’t William
2024 was a painful year for the royal family, as both King Charles and Kate Middleton were diagnosed with cancer. In March 2024, the Princess of Wales announced that she had been diagnosed following abdominal surgery and had begun chemotherapy. However, not many may know that Kate reportedly turned to her sister, Pippa Middleton, and not Prince William, for help drafting the script for the video, which has since been hailed for destigmatizing cancer.
In his new book, William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, royal author Russell Myers pulled the curtains on how Pippa stepped in for her sister. In serialized excerpts published by The Mirror, the author wrote, "She [Kate] had seen the positivity and warmth that had greeted the King when he had been so open about his own diagnosis…Catherine's family rallied round, with her sister Pippa helping to write the script for the short video statement." The announcement, which saw Kate sitting on a bench surrounded by daffodils, showed a different side of her. She spoke about informing her children about the diagnosis, "It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."
Myers also revealed how Kate's siblings supported her throughout her difficult journey, as she underwent chemotherapy and retreated from the public eye. A senior palace source is quoted as saying, "The days beforehand were filled with shock, but at that moment, it was genuinely as if the world stood still." According to the book, Pippa's support did not stop with helping craft the message. Behind the scenes, she frequently visited the Waleses' family home and offered quiet support to her nephews and niece, along with her younger brother, James.
In the emotional video, released shortly after her diagnosis, Kate reflected, "We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery." Her powerful announcement also stood in solidarity with others going through the same, as she said, "I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."
After completing her treatment and announcing she was in remission, Kate slowly but gradually returned to public life. Her first major appearance following the health battle came at The Wimbledon Championships 2024, where she was greeted with applause and a standing ovation. With Pippa by her side, the outing marked an emotional milestone, symbolizing resilience, recovery, and a return to royal duties after a challenging chapter.
