Kate Middleton Comes Full Circle 15 Years After First Royal Outing With Prince William
The Prince and Princess of Wales marked a sentimental full-circle moment, returning to the RNLI 15 years after their first royal engagement.
It’s been fifteen years since Princess Kate's first royal outing, but some things never change. From her first engagement in 2011, just two months before her wedding with Prince William, to the banks of the Thames yesterday, the Princess of Wales’ royal career has come full circle — proving she’s still happiest in waterproof gear and a life vest. On March 12, the couple visited the RNLI Tower Lifeboat Station, leaving their formal attire behind for rugged yellow jackets and baseball caps of the river crew. This trip down memory lane was a replica of their very first joint duty in North Wales, where a then-Kate Middleton poured champagne over the Hereford Endeavor lifeboat to the cheers of the Anglesey crowds.
William and Kate’s 2011 debut in Anglesey saw them christening a new vessel; however, this week’s engagement took things a step further. Under the Tower of London, the Prince and Princess of Wales hopped aboard the lifeboat to experience the choppy river, with the visit serving as an appreciation to the RNLI crew who braved a bitter and challenging winter. At Tower Station — the newest and busiest of the four Thames-based hubs — the couple was briefed on the staggering operational demands of the year so far, particularly that the lifeboat has already been called out 45 times in 2026 — with the crew working 12-hour shifts, 365 days a year. The visit marked the 25th anniversary of the station, with the couple also meeting crews preparing for the April 4th Boat Race.
Not just Kate, William has a deep-rooted history of his own with the RNLI — one forged in the cockpit as a former RAF Search and Rescue pilot. The Prince of Wales has spent years working hand-in-hand with lifeboat crews — often winching survivors from the sea while RNLI vessels stabilized the waters below. This made the visit equally special for him.
But the couple’s outing wasn’t just about lifejackets and boats. In fact, they had a busy schedule walking through the bustling stalls of Borough Market to try their hand at coffee and cheese. Before hitting the waters, the couple had visited the Trethowan Brothers and sampled award-winning Pitchfork Cheddar and Gorwydd Caerphilly. The Prince even tried his hand at carving a wedge of cheese, while the Princess expertly used the traditional wire string to slice through the cheddar. Next, at the TikTok viral Humble Crumble bakery, the pair donned aprons to serve shoppers. The heir apparent took charge of ladling the fruit, while Kate handled the embellishments.
The two also made a surprise stop at Change Please — a coffee place that trains homeless people as baristas. The Princess of Wales stepped behind the counter to pull a fresh cappuccino for William — though the future king playfully rejected it after noticing it wasn’t his preferred decaf.
