Expert Reveals How Kate Middleton Used Her Outfit To Show 'Stability' Amid Andrew Scandal

Fashion expert Lisa Talbot believes Kate Middleton's blue Catherine Walker coatdress sent a pointed message to Andrew.

As the monarchy navigates one of its most challenging periods, Kate Middleton is signaling quiet solidarity with her family through savvy fashion choices. Fashion expert Lisa Talbot analyzed subtle sartorial messages during Middleton's appearance at the Commonwealth Service, pointing to a key detail amid Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest. According to Talbot, the structured shoulder pads in her outfit conveyed confidence, stability, and reassurance, acting as Middleton's 'secret style weapon' during a particularly tense moment for the royal family.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, Talbot opined that the shoulder pads gave a strong message as the monarchy continues to face scrutiny in the aftermath of the former prince's arrest. She said, "Shoulder pads have long been associated with authority and presence; they visually broaden the frame, strengthen the silhouette, and create a sense of composure and control." She added, "They also add structure through the shoulders, which the stylist said makes the look instantly feel more commanding and confident, which is why we've historically seen this shape used by women in leadership roles," calling it 'power dressing' in confidence.

Adding to her analysis, Talbot concluded that Middleton's blue Catherine Walker coatdress was a befitting choice for the occasion. She continued, "It sends a message of strength without needing to say a word… At a moment when the royal family is under scrutiny and navigating difficult headlines, the strong shoulder creates an image of stability and reassurance." She further stressed, "It's polished, purposeful, and incredibly modern, projecting confidence while remaining elegant and respectful to the occasion." Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales has worn shoulder pad dresses several times in the past, most notably during her recent visit to Wales, at a Six Nations rugby union match, and at the 2025 St. Patrick's Day parade.

Middleton's regal outfit for the occasion also featured a sharply structured bodice with peaked lapels flowing into a pleated skirt. She paired her look with a coordinating wide-brim hat, matching pumps, and a structured clutch, mirroring her other appearances at Commonwealth events. Most of her jewelry also carried notable royal symbolism. She paid a subtle tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth by wearing her Bahrain pearl drop earrings, pairing them with her sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring, once owned by the late Princess Diana.

In a similar vein, Talbot has previously analyzed Middleton's subtle sartorial messages in the wake of Mountbatten-Windsor's arrest. In a separate conversation with The Daily Mail, she argued, "At times when the wider royal family is under scrutiny, clothing becomes less about fashion and more about message. By choosing familiar pieces from her existing wardrobe, she [Middleton] removes any distraction and keeps the focus on her role and her work rather than what she's wearing." Explaining the princess's decision to rewear most of her outfits since the arrest, Talbot stressed, "Rewearing subtly communicates steadiness and humility. It signals continuity, responsibility, and respect for the moment."
