Duchess Sophie’s Portugal Return Has Royal Fans Revisiting This Awkwardly Relatable Moment From 2004
A lighthearted moment from Duchess Sophie's 2004 visit to Lisbon has resurfaced as she visits Portugal two decades later.
Duchess Sophie and Prince Edward delighted royal fans when it was announced they would visit Portugal from June 1–3 to mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor. As they touch down in the country, a lighthearted moment from a previous trip has resurfaced, offering a glimpse of Sophie as a newcomer to royal life. During the couple's 2004 visit to Lisbon, the then-Countess of Wessex slipped near the base of an escalator and nearly lost a shoe, with photographers capturing the amusing mishap as she attempted to steady herself.
The picture was taken on September 9th, 2004, when Edward and Sophie visited Alcochete, near Lisbon, to inaugurate the newly opened Freeport Designer Outlet, which was promoted as Europe's largest designer outlet center at the time. According to the photo caption, Sophie had already slipped near the base of an escalator and was seen carefully steadying herself to avoid losing a shoe as she rode it. The moment offered a rare glimpse of Sophie in an unscripted and highly relatable situation during the early years of her royal life after leaving behind her career in public relations. It highlights a stark difference from her current confident image as the royal family's most dependable senior figure.
For those unversed, Edward and Sophie's presence in Lisbon underscored the British connection to the project and lent royal prestige to a UK-backed investment in Portugal. At the time, the development represented around €200 million [now $230 million] in investment and was expected to create thousands of jobs in the region. In yet another hilarious exchange, the cameras captured the couple laughing as British singer Tom Jones spoke about how fans often threw knickers at him, with one of them landing on his face. As Edward folded his hands and grinned, the much more reserved Sophie was seen covering her hands with her mouth as she tried not to laugh.
As for their current visit, the British Embassy in Lisbon shared a beautiful portrait of Edward and Sophie on Instagram with the caption, "The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit Portugal from 1 to 3 June 2026, as we mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor. The visit will celebrate the world's oldest diplomatic alliance and highlight how our historic relationship continues to evolve today." During their three-day visit, they will be participating in engagements related to youth opportunity, sports inclusion, women, and peace and security.
