Diverse Ladies

There was a marked contrast in reaction to Oprah’s bombshell interview by former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama.
Hillary came out swinging for Meghan saying: “It was heartbreaking to see the two of them sitting there having to describe how difficult it was to be accepted, to be integrated, not just into the royal family, but more painfully into the larger societies whose narrative is driven by tabloids that are living in the past.
“Their cruelty in going after Meghan was just outrageous and the fact that she did not get more support, that the reaction was ‘let’s just paper it over and pretend it didn't happen.’
“Well, this young woman was not about to keep her head down.
“This is 2021 and she wanted to live her life, she wanted to be fully engaged and she had every right to hope for that.”
Michelle was much more balanced saying: “This is first and foremost a family.
“I pray for forgiveness and healing for them so they can use this as a teachable moment for us all.”
Michelle’s approach stems from her admiration for the Queen, and husband Barack has said of Elizabeth II: “She is a source of inspiration for me like so many other people around the world.
“She is truly one of my favorite people, an astonishing person and a real jewel to the world, not just the United Kingdom.”
He recently said the Queen would be someone he would like in a small WhatsApp group for her “dry sense of humor.”
Michelle famously put her arm around the tiny monarch on a visit to England and claimed later that the Queen returned the touching gesture.
And a few months later, returning from a trip to Europe, Michelle and her daughters — without the President — were invited for a private visit to Buckingham Palace.
The Queen arranged for Malia and Sasha to be driven around the grounds in a horse-drawn carriage from the royal mews, complete with liveried staff, as she chatted to proud mum Michelle.
Bill and Hillary Clinton seemed to enjoy bathing in reflected glory when they met the Queen, so couldn't they have been a bit more gracious and not taken sides?
