Former Spice Girl’s Moment With Prince William Took a Cheeky Turn — And Victoria Beckham Was Behind It
The Spice Girls' connection to the royal family goes way back, and a former band member revealed there was a clever twist to her MBE ceremony outfit.
The Spice Girls are an integral part of British pop culture history. The band of five girls once took the entire world by storm in the late 90s and even performed in the Closing Ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics. Recently, ‘Scary Spice’ Mel B revealed a cheeky memory from when she received her MBE from Prince William in 2022, and it involves ‘Posh Spice’ Victoria Beckham’s clever design skills.
Victoria turned to fashion design after leaving the band and has emerged as one of the top names in global fashion over the past few decades. She was behind Mel B’s dress for her MBE ceremony, and “knew exactly what she was doing” when she made some spicy design choices. “The last time I saw Prince William, it was when he was pinning my MBE to my chest in a dress Victoria had made for me, which was just a little bit revealing in exactly the place he pinned the medal to. Victoria knew exactly what she was doing when she designed it for me,” Mel B told The Telegraph recently.
However, that was not the first time that 'Scary Spice' met William. The Spice Girls had previously spent a day with William and Prince Harry at Kensington, when the brothers were very young. Mel B further revealed that the pop stars had prepared a dish for the princes at the palace and that one of them had a crush on a band member. “They were young princes, and we made them peanut butter and jam sandwiches in Kensington Palace. They were such cute kids – I can’t remember whether it was William or Harry who had a crush on Emma, but they were so polite and charming and gorgeous,” she said.
As a former Spice Girl, Mel B has an array of unforgettable memories to choose from her time with the band. However, when asked to name the top three, she said it was “either meeting Nelson Mandela, playing at Wembley, or spending a day with Harry and William”.
The Spice Girls’ connection to the royal family goes back a long way. The band had famously met Harry in 1997 when he accompanied his father, now King Charles, in South Africa. The Spice Girls were performing a concert in Johannesburg and were calling on President Mandela to pay their respects. He wrote about his encounter with popular music stars in his memoir, Spare. “Beside me was Baby Spice, wearing white plastic shoes with chunky twelve-inch platform heels. I fixated on those heels while she fixated on my cheeks. She kept pinching them. So chubby! So cute! Then Posh Spice surged forward and clutched my hand. Further down the line, I spied Ginger Spice, the only Spice with whom I felt a real connection - a fellow ginger,” he wrote.
Victoria had dressed Harry’s then-fiancée, Meghan Markle, in her signature cashmere sweater for their engagement photoshoot. She and her husband, David Beckham, later attended the Sussexes’ royal wedding at St. George's Chapel in 2018.
