Charles And Camilla To Leave Peter Phillips' Wedding Early — And the Reason Proves Duty Comes First
The King and Queen are double booked for the day since they will be seen attending two major events on June 6th.
Royal family members who attend royal weddings and their gestures, as well as interactions on such occasions, are the subject of public scrutiny. The royal family is set to come together for the joyous occasion of Peter Philips and Harriete Sperling’s wedding next month. The couple is holding an intimate ceremony at All Saints Church in Kemble, Gloucestershire. The village is located in the Cotswolds, near Cirencester and Princess Anne's Gatcombe Park estate. King Charles and Queen Camilla will be among the limited guests witnessing the couple's vows of union. However, it has been reported that Charles and Camilla will leave the ceremony quickly to honor another long-standing tradition. According to Royal Central, the monarchs are scheduled to attend the Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs the same day. The Jockey Club confirmed the news, marking their presence at this prestigious race for the 247th running. The race, held since 1780, is a premier event for three-year-old thoroughbreds and highlights the royal family's longstanding ties to British racing, continuing a custom started by Queen Elizabeth II, who rarely missed it during her reign.
The Derby is a significant event on the British athletic calendar, with a prize pool of $2 million, making it the wealthiest race in Britain. Jim Allen, General Manager of Epsom Downs Racecourse, expressed his joy at hosting a royal visit. “We are honoured and thrilled that The King and Queen will be joining us at Epsom Downs on Derby Day,” he said. "Their Majesties show great enthusiasm, interest and support for horse racing in the UK and their attendance next week will be a proud moment for all of the team here and everyone connected with the racecourse," he added. The King has been involved in racing for decades, and both he and Queen Camilla are strong supporters of the sport, with the Queen serving as patron of the National Stud since 2018. They have also continued the late Queen's racing tradition, winning an important race at Royal Ascot in 2023.
Their Majesties will, however, have to leave Philips' wedding banquet early because the renowned Derby at Epsom Downs is around 90 miles away. Meanwhile, the soon-to-wed couple is limiting the number of guests at their June wedding to foster intimacy and prevent media distractions. They intend to hold a private event with close family and friends in Gloucestershire, omitting problematic family members such as Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, to focus attention on themselves. The absence of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stems from a long-standing communication breakdown. Furthermore, the venue, a small Cotswold church, cannot hold a large crowd.
Phillips' wedding is notable since he is the oldest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth II and has mostly remained out of the public eye. Sperling has become more visible with her soon-to-be husband at public events during the last two years, gaining acceptance in royal circles and attending high-profile events such as Royal Ascot, charity events, and recently Easter service since their relationship was officially recognized.
