Why Prince Andrew Should ‘Fear the Day’ William Takes the Throne

Trigger Warning: This article contains themes of sexual abuse that some readers may find distressing.
Prince William’s plans to modernize the monarchy might be winning him public praise, but for one royal, it’s a looming nightmare. The Duke of York, once one of the most visible faces of the monarchy, now sits at the fringes of royal life. And according to Palace insiders, he should 'fear the day' William takes the throne.

With William stepping more confidently into his role as future monarch, royal observers say Prince Andrew’s quiet life could soon become even more isolated, especially since the Prince sees his wife, Sarah Ferguson, as a threat to the monarchy. Royal commentator Jennie Bond believes the Prince of Wales is unlikely to extend leniency when his time comes. Writing for The i Paper, Bond said William could ‘wield an axe’ when it comes to excluding Andrew and Fergie from public life altogether. “This avaricious and, it appears, mendacious couple should rightly fear the day that William becomes King,” she wrote.
However, one thing may come in the way for William — his close bond with Andrew’s daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, who are also on the verge of losing everything. Both women are viewed warmly by the public and have largely managed to avoid being dragged down by their parents’ controversies. “Banishing or humiliating Andrew and Fergie would cause the sisters further hurt,” Bond observed. “And that’s a tough nut for William to crack.”

However, given how much the Prince of Wales has focused on change and relevance, nostalgia is unlikely to be an issue. During his recent chat with actor Eugene Levy on Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, William said, “I think it’s safe to say that change is on my agenda. Change for good, and I embrace that, and I enjoy that change. I don’t fear it.”
That, of course, puts Andrew squarely in the firing line. The Duke of York has spent the last several years in exile following his association with Jeffrey Epstein. What began as whispers turned into a full-blown crisis after his 2019 BBC Newsnight interview, in which his evasive answers and bizarre justifications drew widespread criticism.

Soon after, Andrew stepped back from royal duties. His military titles and royal patronages were stripped, and when he settled a civil case with Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre in 2022 without admitting liability, his standing within the Firm became virtually irreparable. Since then, he’s lived quietly at Royal Lodge in Windsor, far removed from the life of ribbon cuttings and balcony appearances that once defined his role.
But controversy continues to follow him. A resurfaced 2011 email allegedly sent from Andrew’s account had him expressing concern for Epstein after their now-infamous photo with Ghislaine Maxwell and Giuffre was published. “I’m just as concerned for you! Don’t worry about me! It would seem we are in this together and will have to rise above it,” the message read. The contents directly contradict his earlier claim that he had severed all contact with Epstein years before the financier’s arrest.
