However, some of his warmest remarks about the Princess of Wales were made far away from the cameras. During King Charles and Queen Camilla's state visit to the United States earlier this year, Trump reportedly spoke candidly about Prince William and Princess Kate in a private conversation, offering heartfelt praise for the future Queen and reflecting on her cancer journey. Royal author Robert Hardman, in a conversation with the Daily Mail, revealed that while Trump praised King Charles as "the greatest King," he had far more flattering words to describe Kate.
Hardman recalled meeting with Trump to discuss his biography of the late Queen Elizabeth II. During their conversation, Trump was asked to share his thoughts about Prince William and Kate, and without missing a heartbeat, he said, "William, he'll be a good King, won't he? He's very nice. A great guy. I like him." Turning his focus on Kate, Trump praised her dignity and commended her strength through the challenges she faced over the past year.
Talking about the Princess, he described her as "perfect" and "so great" before asking, "How's she doing?" Trump also reflected on the intense public scrutiny surrounding Middleton during her cancer diagnosis and treatment, noting, "She's so great. She was sick, people said crazy things about her, and she was so brave." This was certainly not the first time that Trump had praised Kate. Back in September 2025, when Trump attended the state banquet at Windsor Castle, he was seated beside the Princess for dinner. Following the event, he praised her publicly, calling her "so radiant, and so healthy, and so beautiful."
During the same conversation, Trump also briefly shared his thoughts on Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's relationship with the royal family. When asked whether Harry could one day make a return to the royal fold, the President appeared doubtful: "Too many things, I guess." He then added, "That wife of his. Boy, what she's done to that guy." After Hardman suggested that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had been unhappy within the royal hierarchy, Trump replied, "I guess she got blocked out by William's wife."
Trump also reserved plenty of praise for Charles throughout the royal visit to Washington. During the farewell ceremony at the White House, he once again described the monarch as "the greatest king in my book" and spoke warmly about the close relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. While Trump's public admiration for the royal family has long been well known, Hardman's account reveals that behind closed doors, he was equally generous with his praise, especially when it came to Kate.
