Thomas Markle Finds Love with Nurse After Leg Amputation — and She’s Nearly Meghan’s Age
The 81-year-old opened up about love, loss, and starting over after a medical emergency abroad.
It seems one is never too old to find love again. Weathered by illness, estranged from his famous daughter, and not having as many interviews to give, Thomas Markle, 81, has something tender to live for. Meghan Markle's biological father has found affection, of all places, from his hospital bed. Thomas is not a figure the public has come to associate with contentment. His name has surfaced almost exclusively in the context of family rupture, tabloid controversy, and unanswered calls. And now, he is back in the headlines — this time for something altogether different. The retired lighting director confessed that he had found hope when he believed he had none left, on the other side of the world.
Following an emergency amputation of his left leg below the knee on December 3, 2025 — a procedure made necessary by a blood clot in his thigh that severed circulation — Thomas found himself recovering in a rehabilitation hospital in the Philippines. It was there, amid the slow process of healing and rebuilding, that he met Rio Canedo, a 46-year-old nurse and mother of two who works at the facility. What began as a patient-caregiver relationship quietly became something more. "I never expected to find joy and happiness again at my age," Thomas told the Daily Mail. "I felt neglected and sad for so many years, but now I am enjoying life again."
Canedo, for her part, came to him with measured expectations. "I was a bit worried because someone had told me he had a reputation for being grumpy," she admitted. "But I started working with him, and he is a total gentleman and someone who is kind and funny." She also revealed that she had no prior knowledge of Thomas' connection to Meghan or Prince Harry. It may be relevant that Meghan is just two years younger than his father's new love interest.
Thomas has been living in the Philippines after having previously relocated from Mexico. Earlier in 2025, he moved there alongside his son, Thomas Markle Jr. The country, he has said, offered him something he had long been searching for following a turbulent chapter in his life — one that included a stroke in 2022 that marked a significant turning point in his health. "After my stroke, things were not great," he reflected. "I wanted to go to the other side of the world to a place where the people are kind. The Philippines has a gentler way of life. I never expected to meet Rio and have my life changed in such a wonderful way."
"After so many tough times, I feel truly blessed to have found someone very special who takes such good care of me," he added — words that read as much like a love letter as they do a personal reckoning.
