Prince Harry Reveals the One Thing Prince William Couldn’t Stand About Princess Diana

While Prince Diana is an enduring style icon, her own two sons emerged to be her biggest fashion critics for a relatable reason.

Princess Diana continues to be a style icon, whose looks are often emulated by her daughters-in-law, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle. However, fashion sense might not have impressed her own two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. As kids, the two brothers didn’t share the same admiration for their mother’s sense of style as the rest of the world did. But their reason for the critique had absolutely no relation to how the People’s Princess styled her own outfits, which arguably were legendary. Instead, it was about her “taste in children’s clothes”.

As two adorable little children, William and Harry frolicked around the world with their parents, dressed in matching, bright colored clothes. Royal fans at the time might have cooed over the matchy-matchy toddlers. But the aforementioned toddlers may not have felt so stylish in the outfits. The Duke of Sussex wrote in his memoir, “Willy always hated it when anyone made the mistake of thinking us a package deal. He loathed it when Mummy dressed us in the same outfits. (It didn’t help that her taste in children's clothes ran to the extreme; we often looked like the twins from Alice in Wonderland.)” He further clarified that he “barely took notice”.

Harry possibly referenced Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the twin characters from the favorite children’s book who act and dress the same. However, the prince seemingly didn’t care about his styling as long as he wasn’t asked to wear a particular outfit, and the opinion might not sit well with the Scottish. "I didn't care about clothes, mine or anyone else's. So long as we weren't wearing kilts, with that worrisome knife in your sock and that breeze up your a***, I was good,” he wrote.

However, this was not the first time that Harry had confessed his view on Diana’s taste in children’s fashion. During a 2017 documentary, the Duke said, “One thing I would love to ask her now because I genuinely think that she got satisfaction out of dressing myself and William up in the most bizarre outfits normally matching. It was weird shorts and you know like little sort of shiny shoes with the old clip-on. And looking back at the photos, it just makes me laugh. I just think ‘How could you do that to us?’” he chuckled.

Harry further added that as they grew up, William rebelled against wearing the same outfit as his younger brother. “And I'm sort of sitting there going, 'Hang on a second. If you're going to dress differently, I'm not going to be the only person dressed like this. This is just ridiculous.’ So, I like to think that she had great fun in dressing us,” the prince added.

Over the years, the banter between William and Harry extended beyond clothes to them attending Eton College at the same time. The Duke mentioned in his memoir, “For Willy, it was pure agony to wear the same blazer, the same tight shorts, as me. And now, to attend the same school, was pure murder.” If only the siblings knew how strained their relationship would get going forward.
