The Four Things Prince Harry Couldn't Wait to Teach Prince George — But Never Got To
Prince Harry once dreamed of sharing life's big moments with Prince George, but many of those milestones have quietly passed him by.
Ever since Prince Harry stepped down as a working royal and moved to California, he has missed out on some of the major family events. Years ago, he shared how he wanted to be there for his nephew, Prince George, during some of his most memorable moments. But as time has passed, many of those moments have quietly come and gone without him.
Since relocating overseas, Harry has had fewer opportunities to spend time with George, Charlotte, and Louis as they have grown up. When George was born in 2013, he was thrilled to become an uncle and looked forward to being part of his nephew's life. Now, with George already a teenager, one of the moments the Duke once hoped to share has quietly come and gone.
Looking back in Spare, Harry opened up about how much he was looking forward to watching George grow up. He wrote, “I couldn't wait to teach him about rugby and Rorke's Drift, flying and corridor cricket - and maybe give him a few pointers about how to survive life in the fishbowl.”
A lot of the experiences Harry once imagined sharing with George have already come and gone. Cricket is one of them. The young royal, who recently turned 13, was seen enjoying the sport on the beach in his 2026 birthday video. In the clip, he confidently batted the ball before sprinting across the beach, with the setup appearing similar to the one seen in Prince Louis' birthday video, which was also filmed during the Wales family's Easter break in Cornwall. It was another reminder that George has grown into the hobbies Harry once hoped to introduce him to, with both cricket and rugby already becoming part of his world. He seems to have already found his footing without needing any tips from his uncle.
Harry also wrote about the kind of uncle he hoped to be while living at Nottingham Cottage, just a short distance from William and Kate's home at Kensington Palace. “I looked forward to popping in all the time,” he continued, “Holding a bottle of wine and an armful of kiddie presents. Dropping to the floor and wrestling with little George.”
But those casual visits never became the routine he had hoped for. As Harry later reflected in the memoir, "it didn't work out that way." However, he did get a chance to reunite with his father, King Charles, during his recent UK visit. He was joined by Meghan Markle and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
