Resurfaced Clip of Meghan Markle Claiming She 'Nearly Lost' Her Name Has People Saying the Same Thing

Meghan Markle has dropped her surname for a new royal name. In the second episode of her new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, she told Mindy Kaling that her last name is now Sussex—a title she received upon marrying Prince Harry. Since Sussex is now their family name, she views it as a significant identity for her kids. However, her attitude hasn't always been the same in this regard. A resurfaced video from her infamous Oprah Winfrey interview, in March 2021, has her asserting that she nearly lost her 'name' after marrying into the royal fold. In the clip, the Duchess emotionally describes the importance her name 'Markle' had to her.

Reflecting on her decision to do the controversial interview, Markle said, "If that comes with a risk of losing things, there is a lot that has been lost already. I've lost my father; I've lost a baby. I nearly lost my name… There's a loss of identity. I hope the takeaway for people is to see that there is another side, that there is a life worth living." The clip has hence left royal watchers fuming as they pointed out her hypocrisy and just how much her stance has changed in the last four years, the Daily Mail reported.

On X (formerly Twitter) a netizen noted, "Meghan, 2021: 'There’s a lot that’s been lost already...I nearly LOST MY NAME. I mean, there’s a LOSS OF IDENTITY.' Meghan, 2025: 'It’s so funny, too, that you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now.'" In response, a critic slammed, "Nice recall! Thank you! Proves she's a hypocrite who wants to keep the titles because she is nothing without them. She's such a liar! She can't keep track of her lies!" Chiming in, one penned, "Watching this again and her new awful show, it's even more clear now how she is making up the lies as she goes to suit her narrative and can't even see truth and facts from a distorted fantasy world. Markle’s choice to use Sussex as her last name has also left folks from the county upset as she has only made one trip there since her marriage.
