The dynamics between Prince William and King Charles appear to have shifted, especially after the King met Prince Harry on September 10, a meeting William was reportedly not in favor of. Soon after, William’s frosty behavior toward his father at the Duchess of Kent’s funeral was obvious, with experts suggesting Harry played a role in it. Reflecting on these claims, a source explained that while there is no ‘rift’ between William and Charles, they face ‘competitive tensions’ due to differing approaches to achieve their common goal.

The insider stressed that while Charles and William can clash at times, they are united for climate advocacy. They told the Daily Mail, "Like many father-son relationships, there are occasional personal and competitive tensions. Both are very driven individuals and have very similar interests, such as the environment, conservation, the military, and helping deprived communities." The source also revealed that the King and the Prince support their shared passions 'in quite different ways.' They added, "Does that sometimes bring them into competition with one another? Yes, to be fair, it does. But ultimately, they have the same goal: to make life better for the people of this country."

Chiming in on their current dynamic, another source explained that the father and son are ‘stronger than ever’, despite recent reports claiming otherwise. They argued, "It's evident there's an attempt to manufacture division between them, when in reality, no such rift exists." They continued, "In truth, their relationship is as strong as ever, they are aligned in their work, with many areas of shared interest, and united in their vision for the role of the Royal Family." Insiders also shared that while Charles and William do not see each other every week, it has always been the case from the beginning.

Regarding how often William and Charles meet, royal expert Rebecca English revealed that both the father and son are in Scotland this week. She explained that while the Palace keeps meetings between senior royals private, William and Charles definitely meet more often than before, owing to the King’s and Kate Middleton’s cancer battles. An insider chimed in, "If prioritising his family helps make him [William] a better King, it's got to be a good investment. The Prince of Wales…lost his beloved grandmother, his brother, and has faced terrible heartache with his father and his wife."

Tensions between Charles and William after Harry’s meetup were first alleged by royal author Tina Brown. In an op-ed for the New York Times, she argued that the King had layered reasons for agreeing to the sit-down. She wrote, "Charles knows that in these times of ugly political discord, a fractured royal family is a bad look...It’s no secret that Charles desperately misses his 'prodigal son' who, in earlier days, was always the fun, ebullient scamp compared with the haughtier, more Hanoverian William." She further claimed that the King has, hence, grown weary of William’s 'self-righteous intractability' and instead 'wants to re-embrace Harry,' albeit on the condition that he refrains from public attacks on the Firm.
