People Are Noticing One Unexpected Detail Inside Harry & Meghan’s Montecito Home
Leaving the royal life behind for more privacy and financial independence, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left the UK in 2020, finally settling down in the US. Even so, they still generate as many headlines as they did while they were still senior working royals, with their every move closely followed by royal watchers. Despite the ongoing chatter they are now perfectly settled in their $29 million Montecito mansion, also known as The Chateau of Riven Rock, aiming for a more normal childhood for their kids, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. However, a recent viral social media post has left netizens focused on one specific yet staggering detail about their home: it has 16 bathrooms for only 9 bedrooms.
As usual when this detail went viral, the internet was quick to voice their curiosity. In a video shared by @globalstarhomes, fan comments didn’t hold back, with one user asking, “Nine bedrooms and 16 toilets. Really!!!!” A second individual questioned, “Why would they need all that? Living above their means for no purpose. Not like they even have any parties. Scale down and enjoy living.” While a third joked, “They've got 16 thrones where they are.”
While social media was genuinely confused with the sheer amount of bathrooms, there’s actually a very practical – albeit ultra luxurious – logic behind the ratio. While for the average homeowner, 16 bathrooms would probably sound like an endless cycle of scrubbing tiles. But for high-end real estate, the numbers serve a functional purpose. Massive mansions or properties often feature specialized rooms such as a home gym, over-water spa, wine cellar, and home cinema. Each of these rooms typically has its own dedicated bathroom so guests or tenants don’t have to wander through the house.
Along with this, property owners also have extra rooms on the entranceway and near public spaces to ensure staff or visitors never enter the private quarters. Additionally, in opulent buildings, it’s expected that every single bedroom has its own bathroom, with additional half-bathrooms scattered throughout the property for convenience. While the public tallies up the bathrooms, Markle views her residence as a sanctuary of healing. Speaking to The Cult, she once described the immediate emotional impact the house had on the couple. “We did everything we could to get this house. Because you walk in and go… Joy. And exhale. And calm. It's healing. You feel free," she told the outlet. But for the Duchess the most sentimental feature of the mansion isn’t the spa or the home cinema; it’s the two palm trees in the garden that the couple feels represents their bond.
In the same conversation, she recalled Harry’s reaction to the trees, adding, "See how they're connected at the bottom? He goes, 'My love, it's us.' And now every day when Archie goes by us, he says, 'Hi, Momma. Hi, Papa.'" But despite the interviews or the glimpses provided in their docuseries, Harry and Markle are notoriously protective of their privacy. So much so that the Duchess reportedly chose to film her show, With Love, Meghan at a separate rental property. Still, the bathroom detail has surely given the internet plenty to talk about.
