King Charles Keeps His Distance as Andrew Makes a Quiet Promise: ‘They’re Watching His Every Move’
While Andrew continues to cling to hopes of reconciliation, King Charles views him "as a major liability to the monarchy's reputation."
After years of avoiding accountability, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's ties to Jeffrey Epstein finally caught up with him when he was stripped of his titles last year. What followed were repeated snubs from King Charles, who made trips to Sandringham without meeting his exiled brother. Still, Mountbatten-Windsor is clinging to hopes of reconciliation, as sources claim he has quietly reached out to Charles' aides to insist he has no plans to leave the UK, even as the palace remains skeptical of his assurances.
On his Substack, Naughty But Nice, royal columnist Rob Shuter cited insider accounts of the former Prince's alleged promises. He quoted one as having said, "Andrew has been communicating through the King's people — not with Charles personally. There's no direct contact there anymore." Asserting that the royal family no longer trusts him, they added, "Andrew keeps insisting he has nothing to hide and nowhere to run. But after years of scandals, almost nobody is willing to simply take him at his word." While he has not been officially ordered to surrender his passport, Shuter stressed that the pressure has intensified amid fears he could be viewed as a 'flight risk.'
After Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, many assumed that he would be restricted from traveling abroad. However, it is said that his travel ban is self-imposed. The insider spilled, "Technically, nothing is stopping him [Andrew] from getting on a plane tomorrow. And that's exactly what worries the Palace." According to sources, Charles has continued distancing himself from his brother, allegedly seeing him as a liability to the monarchy's reputation. Another explained, "This stopped being about family loyalty a long time ago. For Charles, it's now about protecting the Crown."
And despite attempts from his siblings, Prince Edward and Princess Anne, the King is not ready to place family ties above duty. "People aren't listening to Andrew's promises anymore. They're watching his every move." In fact, last week, Charles visited Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, where Mountbatten-Windsor was recently staying. The visit garnered headlines because the former Duke of York was living just a few miles away at Marsh Farm.
Unsurprisingly, this is not Mountbatten-Windsor's first reported attempt to make things right with his brother. Shuter has previously alleged on his Substack that the former Prince was pressing for a private sit-down with Charles. An insider revealed, "Andrew is refusing to tell anyone what the meeting is about. He won't brief aides, he won't loop in family — he'll only speak directly to the King." Sadly for him, there remains one major obstacle in his efforts to seek forgiveness. They continued, "William controls the room — and Andrew isn't getting in without answers. William has drawn a hard line. No transparency, no meeting."
