Harry Reveals Who Leaked The News About Kate and Meghan's Pre-Wedding Fight — And It’s Not Who You Think
Realizing it's not William and Middleton, the Sussexes tried to find out who actually had reached out to the press.
Prince Harry once revealed who actually leaked the story of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's pre-wedding to the press. At the time, media houses reported that Markle made Middleton cry. However, it was later reported that it was Middleton who made Markle cry. In his memoir Spare, Harry shared texts from the incident and laid it all bare.
He revealed that it was his father, King Charles III, who had aired their dirty linens to the tabloids. As reported by Harper’s Bazaar, Harry wrote, "We all gathered in our little front annexe, and this time there was no small talk: Kate got things rolling straightaway by acknowledging that the stories in the papers about Meg making her cry were totally false.” Middleton allegedly said, "I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry."
Realizing it's not William and Middleton, the Sussexes tried to find out who actually had reached out to the press. Harry wrote, "We went around and around. The list of suspects became vanishingly small. Finally, finally, Willy leaned back and conceded that, ahem, while we had been on tour in Australia, he and Kate had gone to dinner with Pa [Charles] and Camilla. And, alas, he said sheepishly he ‘might have’ let it slip and that there has been strife between the two couples." He added, "I put my hand over my face. Meg froze. A heavy silence fell. So now we knew. I told Willy you, of all people, should have known. He nodded. He knew. More silence. It was time for them to go."
The feud in question happened just days ahead of Harry and Markle's royal wedding in 2018, when Middleton told the former actress that all the flower girl dresses needed to be remade. Middleton was reportedly unhappy with how Princess Charlotte’s dress fit and messaged Markle about it. What followed was a tense exchange that left Markle in tears. Harry later shared the text messages between the two women. Markle also shared her side of the story when she sat for her infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. She shared that after the argument, Middleton came to see her and apologized wholeheartedly with flowers and a card.
Markle said, "I don't think it is fair to her to get into the details of [the fight], because she apologized. And I have forgiven her.” Markle shared that both she and Middleton were deeply emotional at the time—Middleton having recently given birth to Prince Louis and Markle over her dad, Thomas', undergoing medical treatment, and the public feud with her estranged sister, Samantha.
