Duke & Duchess of Westminster Welcome Baby Girl — But Is There More Responsibility for William?

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster just became parents, and Prince William might soon have new godfather duties on his hands. Hugh and Olivia Grosvenor welcomed their first child, a daughter named Cosima Florence Grosvenor, in London on Sunday, July 27, and this might be marking a special milestone that could strengthen the already deep ties between the Grosvenors and the royal family.

The new parents couldn't contain their excitement as they shared the happy news. "The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are thrilled to announce the birth of their baby daughter," a statement by their representative read, as per People magazine. They added that "both the Duchess and Cosima are doing well" and that they "now look forward to spending this special time together as a family."
Baby Cosima's birth caps off a journey that started earlier this year. Back in March, the couple announced that they were expecting. "The Duke and Duchess of Westminster are very pleased to share that the Duchess is expecting a baby in the summer," a spokesperson said at the time. "The couple is delighted with the news and is very much looking forward to starting a family together."

The speculation about William's potential godfather is based on years of close friendship and family connections. Hugh already serves as godfather to both Prince George and Prince Archie. Given this existing bond, it makes perfect sense that William could be asked to return the favor for little Cosima.
Other than the Duke of Westminster, George's godparents include Zara Tindall, Oliver Baker, Julia Samuel, William van Cutsem, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, and Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, all of whom are close friends and trusted figures from both William and Middleton's circles. Interestingly, Prince Harry is not godparent to any of the three royal kids.
Coming back to Hugh and William, the strength of their relationship was obvious during a recent public outing. In April, William and George joined Hugh and the then-pregnant Olivia for an Aston Villa soccer match against Paris Saint-Germain. When Aston Villa scored, Hugh and Olivia jumped up and hugged in celebration. This was one of their first public appearances since announcing the pregnancy.

The Grosvenor family's ties to the monarchy go way beyond. Hugh is King Charles's godson, while his mother serves as godmother to William. These connections span generations and help explain why the families remain so close. Hugh also played a major role in William's life during his own wedding. When Hugh married Olivia at Chester Cathedral on June 7, 2024, almost exactly a year before Cosima's birth, William served as an usher, helping guests like Princess Eugenie find their seats, as per the New York Post.
As for William's godfather duties, while an announcement of whether he is Cosima's godfather remains yet to be made, he is already one to Constantine‑Alexios, the grandson of King Constantine II of Greece, born in 1999.
