Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie Share Rare New Portrait Ahead of Overseas Visit
Released a week before their three-day visit, the picture shows Sophie leaning against Edward as they smile at the camera.
While King Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton are often in the spotlight, Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie have maintained a relatively low profile, quietly supporting King Charles with royal duties amid his cancer battle. Hence, royal fans were surprised when the couple stepped back into the spotlight with a new portrait ahead of their significant trip to Portugal. Released before their three-day visit, it shows Sophie leaning against their husband as they smile at the camera, with Edward looking dapper in a blue suit and tie.
The striking picture was clicked by photographer Millie Pilkington, who has previously worked with the royal family. Shared by the British Embassy Lisbon on Instagram on May 21, the post was captioned, "The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will visit Portugal from 1 to 3 June 2026, as we mark the 640th anniversary of the Treaty of Windsor. The visit will celebrate the world's oldest diplomatic alliance and highlight how our historic relationship continues to evolve today." The other two slides in the carousel, one in Portuguese and the other translated into English, detailed how the couple would undertake engagement in fields related to youth opportunity, sports inclusion, women, and peace and security.
According to the announcement, Edward and Sophie's visit will also include stops at historic sites reflecting the UK and Portugal's heritage, alongside meetings with students and community organizations highlighting innovative partnerships. Their three-day trip is expected to strengthen diplomatic and cultural ties between the two countries, while also reflecting the couple's growing responsibilities in the monarchy. As senior working royals, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh continue to play an increasingly visible role in supporting the Crown, and are reportedly trusted by the King.
Their new portrait follows another rare group photo released earlier this year in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth's 100th birthday. At the center were King Charles and Queen Camilla, surrounded by the other senior royals. Prince William and Princess Kate were also present, alongside Charles's siblings, Princess Anne and Edward, who was joined by Sophie. William notably stood out as the only one among the late Queen's eight grandchildren currently serving as a full-time working royal. Unsurprisingly, former Prince Andrew was missing after he was ostracized from the Firm for his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
