Author Claims Meghan Markle Expected to Be 'the Next Queen' Over Kate — and Left When She Couldn't
Royal author claims Meghan always thought she’d outrank Kate and never fully understood what she was stepping into when she married Harry.
Meghan Markle is at the center of controversy yet again, and this time it involves beloved Princess Kate. Tom Bower, the author of the new book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, has made quite a few explosive claims so far. During the writer’s appearance on the Kinsey Schofield Unfiltered podcast, he said, “This establishment figure reported to the Queen that Megan thinks that once she marries into the royal family, she's going to be God. Which is pretty hilarious, but clearly, she believed it.”
Released on March 26, the book is basically an in-depth look at the royal family, and it spends a lot of time on Markle and Prince Harry. Bower makes a series of claims about what went down during their time in the monarchy and what led to them stepping away. “Clearly, she thought... I've come to the conclusion, with the help of others on the inside, that she really thought she, rather than Kate, should be the next queen after Charles. She couldn't understand why she was better looking, and in her view, more intelligent, harder working, and everything, should be the queen,” he continued.
Bower went on to say that since the Duke of Sussex was sixth in line to the throne, coming after Prince William and his three children, Markle never planned to be a full-time working royal. He explained, “And she hated the idea that she and Harry were relegated so far down the order. She got everything she wanted and then knew what she wanted and couldn't get, and that was a lot. That's why, of course, she never intended to stay.”
The author also claimed in the book that Markle never fully understood what she was stepping into. According to him, the royal family is not just a regular family but something the public is deeply invested in, almost like a national fixation. He argued that while royals may seem normal on the surface, the whole system depends on people treating them ‘like god.’ He went on to allege that Markle ignored much of the guidance she was given on royal rules before marrying Prince Harry and expected to be treated the same way.
In the book, Bower writes that Queen Camilla once told a friend she felt Markle had 'brainwashed' Harry. He also said that Meghan was seen as a pretty divisive figure, with Prince William and Kate reportedly viewing her as a “threat.” The writer then dived into Harry and Markle’s relationship with Prince William and Kate. “William’s dislike of Meghan had been obvious after his warning to Harry before their engagement. 'It's gone too quickly,' William had said about the speed of Harry’s relationship with 'the American actress,’” he wrote.
However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not hold back and responded to the claims made by Bower. A spokesperson of the couple said, “Mr. Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
