Harry and Meghan Slam New Book for Spreading 'Deranged Conspiracy': 'Language Speaks for Itself'
Royal author Tom Bower, one of the Sussexes' long-time critics, has released a new book filled with scathing claims about their private lives.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are no strangers to unwarranted criticism, with nearly every aspect of their lives under public scrutiny. Even after stepping down as senior royals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to face sensationalized allegations. One of their longtime critics, royal author Tom Bower, has released a new book filled with scathing claims about their private lives. In response, the Sussexes' spokesperson dismissed the biography as a baseless attempt to undermine the couple, accusing it of fueling false theories.
Bower's biography, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, pulls the curtains on alleged tensions between Harry and Markle and the royal family. Criticizing the book, a Sussex spokesperson told PEOPLE, "Mr. Bower's commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation. This is someone who has publicly stated, 'The monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,' language that speaks for itself." They continued: "He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him."
In serialized excerpts published by The Times, Bower makes several claims about Harry and Markle's lives. He suggested that the 2025 Invictus Games were more about the Sussexes' public appearances than serving the purpose of empowering injured veterans and servicemen. He also raised doubts about some competitors' injuries, claiming that participants were actually dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder rather than visible physical wounds. Responding to the false narratives, a spokesperson for the Invictus Games asserted, "It is disappointing to see The Times give prominence to commentary that appears driven by a long-established agenda rather than a genuine understanding of the Invictus Games and the community it supports."
The Foundation argued that the Games remain focused on "the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans from around the world," adding that attempts to undermine serious mental health issues or question competitors' legitimacy were disrespectful to the men and women the Games were created for. They stressed, "The focus should remain where it belongs—on the courage, recovery, and camaraderie of those who have served."
Bower's book also detailed the couple's alleged issues within the Palace walls. In one excerpt, he mentioned that when Markle fought with Prince William, she snapped at him, saying, "If you don't mind, get your finger out of my face." With the chaos unfolding, Queen Camilla was said to be taken aback and reportedly told one of her friends, "Meghan brainwashed Harry." The summer of 2018 was very challenging for the royals with the Duke's changing persona. When reached out for a comment, Buckingham Palace refused to respond, as it steers clear of commenting on biographies.
