The era of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Sarah Ferguson as fixtures of the British countryside may be drawing to a close. After years of scandals and King Charles’ decision to officially strip them of their royal titles, sources indicate the pair is looking for a way out. While the disgraced royal already vacated Royal Lodge on February 4, shifting to the modest Wood Farm temporarily, the Duchess’s next residence is still unknown. Even so, with rising speculation, the two allegedly feel that the country has become a place of relentless pressure rather than a home, and might leave the UK altogether.

Between the lingering shadow of the former Prince’s past associations with disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein and the former couple’s new status as private citizens, they feel increasingly alienated from the country they once served. A friend of the two spoke to OK! and shared the depths of their frustration. “There is a real feeling that the situation has become intolerable,” the friend noted, also adding that the pair feels “constantly judged, scrutinized, and publicly shamed, with no respite.” The source suggested that this perceived hostility has made even the easiest aspects of daily life quite tough. “Even their most ordinary decisions provoke criticism,” they added. “That relentless pressure is driving them to seriously consider a future far from Britain, where they could live with some dignity and peace.”

While the former Duke and Duchess have spent years attempting to rebuild their image, there is a growing consensus that the British public is unlikely to move on. Friends of the duo suggest that staying in Britain is now viewed as a form of public penance with no expiration date. “There is a strong belief that reconciliation with the public is no longer possible,” another source highlighted, also noting, “From their perspective, remaining in Britain only extends a period of limbo and criticism, with no realistic prospect of rehabilitation or forgiveness.” While such reports remain unconfirmed at the moment, Ferguson’s real estate moves are adding more fuel to the fire.

Ferguson’s sale of her London home in Belgravia is being seen as a strategic decision to exit from the UK market. The former couple’s friends point to Switzerland or the Middle East as the most likely landing spots. Mountbatten-Windsor has ties to Abu Dhabi, and the York family has long favored the privacy of the Swiss Alps. Another friend suggested that the shifting royal hierarchy is also a factor, especially as the monarchy’s leadership quietly moves toward Prince William. Given this, exploring different countries is simply a practical move toward a new life.

The urgency to leave the UK is apparently also fueled by the stark contrast in lifestyle awaiting them if they stay. Moving from the grand 30-room Royal Lodge to the shoebox-sized Marsh Farm is a transition that friends say is simply too much to bear. Tensions have escalated further following the US Department of Justice’s recent release of 3 million additional Epstein files, which have once again landed Mountbatten-Windsor and Ferguson in hot water. While the pressure continues to mount, whether they will ultimately take the leap and move abroad remains to be seen.
