5 Pictures of King Charles Showing His Rare Relaxed Side in Nassau
In His Element
King Charles III usually maintains a strict approach during royal engagements. But during his recent visit to Nassau, The Bahamas, the monarchy gave royal watchers a glimpse of another side of him. A side rarely seen, relaxed and peppy. From getting into the boxing spirit to joining a lively street celebration, the King appeared ready to enjoy the island's warm welcome. Here are five pictures of Charles proving that even a monarch can let his hair down once in a while!
PM Giggles
Diplomacy does not always have to be serious business, and Charles proved it during his audience with Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis at Government House. The King was photographed laughing with the Prime Minister during their October 28 meeting. Although their inside joke was never revealed, it was quite a sight seeing the two cracking up. The warmth stood out against the backdrop of the visit. Demonstrations were reported ahead of the King’s arrival, reflecting continuing debate in the Bahamas over the legacy of British colonial rule and slavery. Against that, the lighter moment suggested a visit conducted with goodwill on both sides.
Tree Talk
Charles has a soft spot for nature, and his visit to Bonefish Pond National Park gave him another chance to show it. The King planted a silver buttonwood, also known as a silver mangrove, as he learned about the area's mangrove ecosystem and conservation work. But the sweetest detail came afterwards. According to The Sun's Royal Editor Matt Wilkinson, Charles has a charming tradition of wishing trees and bushes good luck whenever he plants one. Wilkinson shared the moment on X, writing that the King “bids it ‘good luck,’ as he likes to do every time he is asked to plant a tree or bush.”
Boxing Banter
The King also got a hilarious gift during his visit to the Bahamas Boxing Academy. While mingling, he spotted a staff member wearing a quirky T-shirt featuring an anime-inspired image of himself wearing a crown, gloves, and boxing shorts, printed across a row of black T-shirts. Jermaine Gibson, president and CEO of the All-Out Boxing Club, wore one as he met the King alongside 12-year-old Sanai Miller. Charles was pleasantly surprised by the gift and, accepting it, he cheekily replied, “How generous!” He was then seen joking with a group of kids, saying, “It’s not an excuse to get out of school? I might see you at the Commonwealth Games.”
Dancing King
Forget the stiff royal walk for a moment, because Charles had a little fun with the locals! During a Junkanoo parade in Parliament Square, the King watched performers celebrate Bahamian culture through music, costumes, and energetic dancing. He watched from the sidelines at first, but the lively performers soon encouraged him to join in. Charles then joined in with handbells, creating a wonderfully unexpected royal moment.
Navy Smiles
The King rounded off our collection of relaxed moments with a cheerful appearance at the Royal Bahamas Defence Force's Coral Harbour Base. Charles was photographed smiling during his visit, offering another glimpse of his lighter mood while meeting members of the defence force. The occasion was still an official engagement, but his expression added a little warmth to the proceedings. He undeniably looked cool wearing his sunglasses and parading around with the officers.
