Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle May Be Forced to 'Downsize' Their $14M Montecito Mansion
Their California dream home comes with a hefty price tag—and royal commentators are questioning whether it can remain part of the Sussex lifestyle long term.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Montecito estate has become a symbol of their post-royal life in California. However, recent comments from royal commentators and reports about the high costs associated with maintaining the property have sparked renewed discussion about whether the Sussexes could eventually scale back their lifestyle. Royal commentator Maureen Callahan brought these speculations to light during an appearance on The Royals Uncensored podcast. She was joined by Katie Nicholl and Jo Elvin. Callahan claimed that financial realities may be having an effect on the Sussexes' lifestyle.
In the show, she shared, "So the stories are that they may need to downsize from that $14M Montecito mansion.” While explaining the reasoning behind the speculation, Callahan revealed, "They are having a lot of trouble monetizing what they used to monetize, which is their connection to the Royal Family, which was secrets of the Royal Family. The information supply has been choked off." While rumors about a potential move have surfaced from time to time, the recent speculations have been taking center stage due to their reported financial constraints.
The couple purchased the property for $14.65 million in 2020. They did so after relocating and planning to start afresh in California. Yet high costs are involved in maintaining such an estate. According to Page Six, an insider recently claimed that "money is tight" for the Sussexes, particularly because they require at least US$6 million on an annual basis to cover operating expenses associated with their Montecito lifestyle. The publication further reported that around $3 million of that figure is spent on private security alone. In addition, mortgage obligations and other household costs are also involved in these expenses.
Those reports have emerged as the Sussex couple wants to go forward with building their independent lives and business ventures. They have been particular about doing so outside the Royal Family. Since leaving royal duties in 2020, the couple has pursued media projects, charitable initiatives, and commercial partnerships. However, commentators continue to argue whether the opportunities that trailed behind them after their departure from royal life are as lucrative as they once used to be.
The discussion about costs has also resurfaced another debate over the financial realities of the Sussexes' post-royal life. While speaking to The Mirror, a source close to the couple suggested that maintaining their independence always involves challenges not faced by other members of the Royal Family. The insider said, "In some respects, it is undoubtedly more challenging" for Harry and Markle. They argued that the couple "no longer have a sovereign grant to support them nor access to multiple homes maintained at public expense, whether through rent-free arrangements or nominal rents."
Yet, the source stressed there is another side to the story. They continued, "But what they do have is an independent and entirely self-funded life, one that nobody else has to pay for and nobody else needs to worry about funding." As of now, there is no concrete indication that the Duke and the Duchess are planning to leave their Montecito home. However, remarks from royal commentators, reports of rising operating expenses, and renewed backlash regarding royal housing arrangements have added fuel to the fire of the ongoing speculation about whether their California lifestyle can be sustained in its current form in the future.
