Why Harry and Meghan’s Potential UK Return Could Turn Into a 'Nightmare'
Attention has been diverted towards what some commentators believe could become an unexpected complication for Harry and Meghan's upcoming UK visit.
Prince Harry is slated to return to the UK this July for a week-long visit, primarily to kick off the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. Rumors are swirling that Meghan Markle, and possibly their kids, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, could also accompany him. If they do, it will be a highly significant moment for the family, marking Meghan’s first time back in the country since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022. However, royal commentators are already pointing to an unexpected complication that could overshadow the highly anticipated visit.
As per the Express, royal journalist Rob Shuter noted that sources have flagged Birmingham’s ongoing waste management strike as a potential complication for the Duke of Sussex's upcoming visit. One insider reportedly stated, “This is a nightmare scenario for Harry. He wants Meghan to reconnect with the UK, not arrive at headlines about garbage, bad smells, and a city under pressure.” The remarks underscore concerns that local civic issues could distract from the positive media narrative the Prince hopes to achieve during his family's return.
The source went on to elaborate on why the issue had gotten so sensitive. They mentioned, “The trash has become a symbol of everything people are angry about [in Birmingham]. Residents are fed up, businesses are complaining, and visitors can't help but notice.” While the strike is largely a local issue, timing has also brought to light whether the media coverage could focus as much on the city’s challenges as on the Invictus-related events as well. The concerns seem to extend beyond the viewpoint and into worries about the Games’ broader message.
Behind the scenes, Invictus Games organizers are desperate to protect the event's true purpose. A source told Shuter, “Everyone wants the story to be about the athletes and Harry's mission. The fear is that one photo of overflowing bins could overshadow months of preparation.” Because the Invictus Games—which Harry founded in 2014—remain his most significant charitable legacy, any local distraction that pulls focus from the inspiring stories of the athletes is a major concern.
The speculation coincides with Harry’s ongoing battle over security issues in the UK. Since stepping back as senior royals in 2020 and relocating to California, the couple lost their taxpayer-funded police protection—a decision Harry unsuccessfully challenged in court. Because of this, he has openly expressed safety fears about bringing his family to British soil. While Archie was born in the UK, Lilibet has visited only once, for the late Queen's Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. As July approaches, the big question remains whether the Sussexes will arrive in the UK for a successful family trip or if local crises will undermine their highly anticipated return.
