Invictus Games Could Bring Harry Back to the UK — but Only If Meghan Also Comes

Prince Harry has no intention of returning to the UK with just his children and not Meghan Markle. As questions grow around whether Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet might attend the Invictus Games, sources close to the Duke of Sussex say the idea of Harry travelling with the children alone has been ruled out. And earlier reports also suggested that Markle is said to be considering appearing alongside him at a one-year countdown event for the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham on July 10. If the plan goes ahead, it would mark her first visit to Britain since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in September 2022.

The Invictus Games will be held in Birmingham in 2027, marking the event’s first return to England since 2014. While the Games are central to Harry’s work, any family visit will depend largely on the outcome of his ongoing security review. The 41-year-old duke is currently waiting for a decision from the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) on whether he will receive automatic police protection when visiting the UK.

That decision is expected to determine whether Meghan, 44, and their two children — Archie, six, and Lilibet, four — travel with him. A source told The Times that Harry is open to bringing his family to Britain if the security issue is resolved. “There will be all kinds of considerations, like the children’s school and other commitments,” the source said. “But if the security is sorted, then yes, of course, that would open up the door to come back more with his family and bring the family over more. He’s been clear on that.”

Sources say Harry remains deeply involved in planning the Games and is at his happiest when working on the ground. One insider said, “He hates sitting in front of his computer. He loves to travel, getting around, meeting people — that’s when he’s at his best. It’s going to be a fun year.”

People close to the Sussexes have also dismissed suggestions that Markle would refuse to return to the UK. “I think she would come back with him [and the children],” one source said. “They love to do things as a family whenever they can, and when they do philanthropic work, they often take the kids along privately.” The source added, “I can’t see a reason why he’d come over with the kids without her.”

The stance, however, also contrasts with Harry’s comments after losing a court appeal over his security arrangements in May 2025. Speaking to the BBC at the time, he said: “I can't see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.”

Since then, Harry has asked for a fresh review of his security needs, writing to the Home Secretary to request a new risk assessment. Sources say he is feeling confident about the process. “It’s not a nice experience to be in court,” one said. “But he sees it as necessary and wants to move on. He hopes justice will prevail.”
