Sarah Ferguson Was Always ‘Massively Endearing’ — But One Bad Trait Had ‘a Stronger Hold’
Sarah Ferguson's alleged 'bad side' serves as a sobering reminder of how unchecked misbehavior can push even royalty into financial despair.
Sarah Ferguson's extravagant lifestyle has long made headlines, serving as a sobering reminder of how unchecked spending can push even royalty into financial despair. Now largely banished from the royal fold, the former Duchess of York is reportedly struggling to keep things afloat. Weighing in on her alleged compulsive spending, royal author Ingrid Seward revealed that Ferguson's greed was rooted in her deep-seated insecurities and an inability to accept reality.
Speaking to The Mirror, Seward said that she was not surprised by Ferguson's shady financial dealings because of her famous 'bad side,' which often overpowered her. She said, "It's a tragedy that her bad side has got the stronger hold over her than her good side. So the bad side is the greed, the stupidity, and obsessively wanting things…Royal Lodge was always absolutely full of the most beautiful flower arrangements, and we all know what that costs." According to her, Ferguson's unchecked spending could be attributed to two major reasons. "Often when you read about people who can't stop spending money, it's usually fueled by insecurity and an inability to connect with reality."
Seward argued that Fergie is no longer the same person that she had met 40 years ago. She stressed, "But I think because her [Ferguson's] mother left, there is a sort of basic something missing there, I don't quite know how to describe it. There is something missing in her personality. She's so insecure, which is probably at the root of many of her behaviors." The expert was talking about Susan Barrantes, who abandoned her husband and two young daughters in 1970 to elope with her then-lover, Argentine polo player Héctor Barrantes.
Seward is not the only one who has accused Ferguson of reportedly having a callous regard for money. In an article on his Substack, royal expert Tom Sykes revealed that despite being in dire need of money, Ferguson continues her alleged overspending. He penned, "She [Ferguson] has no official role and no access to public funds, and her charities have dropped her after the most recent Epstein files dump, calling him her 'supreme friend.' At the same time, Ferguson's taste for luxury has not dimmed. She reportedly spent nearly a month over the winter at Paracelsus Recovery in Switzerland, a hushed, ultra-discreet wellness clinic where a stay can cost around $17,000 a night."
The expert claimed that the former Duchess, who's been described by her friends as 'hard up, homeless, and alone,' continues to bounce between borrowed villas, Gulf boltholes, and high-end retreats (including one in Donegal, Ireland) after being removed from Royal Lodge. According to him, this very habit, "has always made Ferguson volatile: no money, expensive habits, and a sense that the Palace has hung her out to dry."
