Prince Harry made scathing allegations against the royal family in his memoir, Spare. In one particular excerpt, he praised his wife, Meghan Markle, for not having any morning sickness during her pregnancy with Prince Archie. Royal watchers zeroed in on his comments and slammed Harry for taking a ‘subtle dig’ at Kate Middleton, who suffered severe morning sickness while pregnant.

The Princess of Wales suffered from a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) during all three of her pregnancies. As reported by Tyla, Harry penned, “The papers reported that Meg was battling fatigue and dizzy spells and couldn't hold any food down, especially in the mornings, all of which was untrue. She was tired, but otherwise a dynamo.” He added, “Indeed, she felt lucky not to be suffering severe morning sickness, since we were embarking on a hugely demanding tour.” The royal tour Harry was referencing was their first as a couple in 2018, covering Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Tonga.

After royal watchers caught a whiff of Harry’s subtle ‘pregnancy dig’ at Middleton, they unleashed a firestorm on Reddit. A critic slammed, “'No morning sickness'... dig at Princess Catherine, who had severe morning sickness with her pregnancies. 'Of course, Meg is a dynamo.'” In a similar vein, another echoed, “Such a dig toward anyone with morning sickness, but especially hyperemesis gravidarum like Catherine had,” while one penned, “Nice little dig at Princess Catherine… The way he talks about any woman other than his sainted wife and mother is extremely telling.” As the comments poured in, a royal watcher opined, “This reads to me as a dig at Catherine. Remember all those articles about how Meghan was in way better shape than Catherine.”

While many argued that Harry’s remarks were in poor taste, others brought up the rumor of Markle having used a surrogate for her children to troll the Sussexes. A netizen said, “I've been back and forth on the pregnancy issue, but after hearing their absolutely ridiculous birth story, I am now firmly in surrogate territory.” Another quipped, “Morning sickness is for surrogates.” Meanwhile, one stressed, “I really extra hated this part because the word 'dynamo’ suggests women who feel those normal pregnancy issues are less.”

The Princess of Wales has been open about her difficult pregnancies due to hyperemesis gravidarum. As reported by the BBC, she said on Giovanna Fletcher's podcast, Happy Mum, Happy Baby, that the illness meant she was “not the happiest of pregnant people.” She added, “I saw the power of it really, the meditation and the deep breathing and things like that, that they teach you in hypnobirthing, when I was really sick, and actually I realized that this was something I could take control of.” Harry’s memoir also recounts an ill-fated remark made by Markle to Middleton, suggesting she had ‘baby brain’ because she forgot something inconsequential. The remark allegedly prompted Middleton to give Markle a tongue-lashing, insisting she had no right to comment on her hormones.
