Real Reason Why Kate Middleton Received a Curtsy Before Prince William at Latest Event
Kate Middleton usually lets Prince William take the lead during such major official appearances.
On Wednesday, Prince William and Kate Middleton stepped out together at Canterbury Cathedral for a historic Enthronement Ceremony, installing Dame Sarah Mullally as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. Representing the monarchy on behalf of King Charles, William played a key role at the event, but Kate’s elegant appearance also captured the headlines. One royal moment that has especially captured public attention was when Kate received a curtsy before her husband. The gesture quickly sparked curiosity among royal watchers across the country.
As the royal couple arrived at the Cathedral, they received a warm welcome from the Lord Lieutenant of Kent, Lady Colgrain. She greeted them with a curtsy before exchanging handshakes, but while Kate usually lets William take the lead in such occasions, this time, she was the first to receive a curtsy from Lady Colgrain, as reported by People Magazine. Interestingly, there was a practical reason behind this, as the Princess of Wales was sitting on the side of the car that was facing the church and got to greet Lady Colfrain first, while William had to walk all the way around the car after getting out at the venue.
It is also worth noting that over the years, William has taken a step back to support his wife by letting her take the spotlight at several events—especially those that are linked to her patronages or causes for which she is deeply passionate. At the same time, biographer Penny Junor had previously mentioned how Kate has been supportive throughout, stating, "She’s never trying to outshine him [William] in any way. I think that Kate is a bit like Prince Philip supporting the Queen. She doesn’t outshine William but still has a lot to say herself."
Although William and Kate were welcomed with a curtsy at the historic ceremony, there is actually no such strict requirement for how people should greet the members of the Royal Family. The official royal website states, “There are no obligatory codes of behavior when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms.” That said, Kate often chooses to curtsy to King Charles and Queen Camilla as a mark of respect on various occasions.
