Queen Elizabeth 'Did Not Believe' Claims of Andrew's Misconduct in Epstein Scandal
The allegations against Andrew fueled public outrage and led to concern within the family.
Prince Andrew’s legal troubles, especially those linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, sent shockwaves through the monarchy. The damaging revelations didn't just trigger widespread public backlash; they also raised massive internal concern, forcing members of the royal family, including the senior royals, to distance themselves and strip away Andrew's titles. However, a new claim has now suggested that the late Queen Elizabeth II did not believe the allegations against her son over his links to Epstein.
A little while before Elizabeth's death, a woman named Virginia Giuffre alleged that Andrew sexually assaulted her in 2001, when she was just 17 and a victim of Epstein’s trafficking network. Andrew firmly rejected any such claims and eventually settled the case in New York in 2022 for an undisclosed amount. But despite all this, the Queen did not accept any accusations made against her son. She also contributed some of the money, which was used to settle the case. This situation was revealed by Author Hugo Vickers in his new book titled Queen Elizabeth II, which is set to be out in April this year, as reported by Newsweek.
Vickers wrote, "Andrew’s problems caused the Queen considerable distress in the last years of her life. She was deeply concerned about his future. One idea, developed in the last year of her life, was to set up a foundation that Andrew could administer." He then talked about the late Queen refusing to accept the allegations against her son, saying, "Despite his car-crash interview on Newsnight, and other apparent revelations, the Queen did not believe he had behaved improperly. It is fortunate that she did not live to witness the denouement." The queen died in September 2022, and Andrew was present at her funeral.
That said, Andrew has now been stripped of his royal title and honors. In an official statement, the Buckingham Palace wrote, "His Majesty has today initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew. Prince Andrew will now be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor." As reported by the BBC, they added, "His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation."
Not just this, Andrew's ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was also asked to vacate the Royal Lodge and make her own arrangements. However, for their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, there hasn't been any major formal change. They will retain their princess titles, as they are the daughters of a sovereign’s son, and their positions in the line of succession also remain unchanged. As per the official data, Andrew is still eighth in line to the throne, followed by Beatrice and Eugenie in ninth and twelfth places respectively.
