Queen Camilla’s Reaction to Cutting a Giant Marmalade Sandwich Leaves Everyone in Stitches [Video]
The lighthearted moment came when Camilla appeared alongside the beloved children’s fictional character Paddington Bear.
Queen Camilla maintained a packed schedule of engagements across London on June 2. Her day began alongside King Charles and Princess Kate to support Cancer Research UK’s 125th anniversary, followed by hosting seriously ill children at Clarence House. However, it was an earlier appearance at the British Library that stole the show. While joining celebrations for the National Year of Reading and the Big Lunch community initiative, the Queen sparked a wave of laughter from onlookers during one of the day's most memorable moments.
The lighthearted moment took center stage when Camilla appeared alongside the beloved children’s fictional character Paddington Bear, who was unveiled as the National Year of Reading ambassador for 2026. As part of the festivities, the Queen was invited to cut a giant cake shaped like Paddington's famous marmalade sandwich to make the occasion extra special. However, the task proved trickier than expected, with a clip showing that Camilla struggled to slice through the oversized creation. The relatable moment, among many others, quickly drew smiles from those gathered. It also added a touch of humor to an event designed to promote reading and community spirit among children and bring people together. Watch the clip here.
While at the British Library, Camilla also met the exceptional 12-year-old author Betsy Griffin. The little one was diagnosed with a rare and inoperable brain tumor when she was two years old, leaving her blind. After learning that Betsy's book Out Of The Woods had been published by HarperCollins in 2024, the Queen praised the young author. She told her, "I hear you wrote a book. I'm so impressed, that's absolutely incredible." Betsy later described meeting the Queen as "very nerve-wracking" but warmly added that it was "definitely one of the most memorable days of my life."
The Queen's day continued at Clarence House, where she welcomed six very ill children supported by the charity Dreams and Wishes. Although heavy rain forced the party indoors, the weather didn't damp spirits; Camilla personally served tea and cake, helped the children search for clues during an indoor treasure hunt, and handed out party bags. The highlight of the afternoon was a touching moment with young Rupert Williams. When Camilla learned Rupert had been hoping she would do the honors, she happily pinned his Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct medal onto his jacket. Reflecting on the day afterward, Rupert's mother, Hannah Williams, said, "Today has created some very precious moments for us. Traveling through London in a carriage was an insane and very special moment."
