King Charles and Kate Middleton Reunite at Cancer Research UK Reception In Touching Moment
King Charles and Kate brought their personal cancer journeys to the forefront at a landmark Cancer Research UK reception.
King Charles and Kate Middleton demonstrated how willpower and courage can change one's fate, even in difficult times. They participated in their first cancer-related joint engagement since disclosing their diagnoses in 2024 at St. James’s Palace in London to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Cancer Research U.K., which Queen Camilla, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and other guests also attended. They interacted with researchers, clinicians, and volunteers, PEOPLE! reported. The King, who has been a patron of the charity since his cancer diagnosis, enquired about and supported the organization's work in prevention, detection, and treatment. Additionally, the event featured immersive displays demonstrating technology advancements in cancer research.
Popular TV presenter Davina McCall was among the guests at the Cancer Research UK reception on Tuesday, joining singer Ronan Keating and mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry at St James's Palace. McCall, who was diagnosed with breast cancer last year and received the all-clear following surgery, spoke warmly about the evening, telling the Press Association it was "a really wonderful exchange" and that the King, Queen, and Princess were "all wonderful." She also praised Catherine and Charles for their openness about their diagnoses, saying she couldn't imagine how difficult it must have been to share something so personal with the world when it would have been "much easier and nicer" not to.
The monarch's support for Cancer Research U.K. was highlighted during his April 2024 visit to University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Center, marking his first public engagement following health announcements. Earlier this year, the monarch also made two significant visits related to cancer support. On May 26, he visited the redeveloped Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Center at York Hospital. While there, he broke royal protocol by hugging and kissing a breast cancer survivor on the cheeks, thereby earning applause for his humane approach. Earlier, on May 12, he toured the Cancer Center at Guy's Hospital in London to celebrate its 300th anniversary, engaging with patients and medical staff.
Having experienced his own high-profile cancer battle, Charles empathized with the patients at York Hospital, telling them, "It's so important to be able to talk". Meanwhile, Middleton has been carving her own path after entering remission in January 2025. She completed a two-day trip to Italy, her first international royal engagement since her recovery. For today's occasion, Middleton stunned in her classy style, wearing for the first time an elegant red polka-dotted midi dress from Rodarte, complemented by red Gianvito Rossi suede heels, a ruby pendant necklace, ruby and diamond earrings, and a matching red clutch from Miu Miu, Town and Country Magazine reported.
The Princess of Wales normally chooses recycled wear for royal engagements; however, her latest decision to wear a bespoke design to a reception two years after her cancer diagnosis emphasizes her work and dedication to cancer awareness. Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales had shared a poignant message in response to her remission. “As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal,” she said at the time. “I am, however, looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
