The royal family has been managing a slimmed-down working line after King Charles acceded to the throne, and it has been buckling under various controversies over the past few months. There are the alleged Epstein connections of the former Duke of York, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor; the recent calls for financial transparency after it was revealed that King Charles is still paying rent for his nieces; and, finally, the Sussex fiascos that have been giving the monarchy sleepless nights. Amid all this, one royal expert believes a single figure poses the greatest threat to the monarchy's future — and points to Prince Harry as the 'poison' behind its troubles.

Last week, Harry returned to the UK in his capacity as the founder of the Invictus Games; he was seen attending various charity and opening events in connection with his obligations. However, what came as a shock was the intimate meeting held at Highgrove between Charles and the Sussexes. The reunion came amid a busy period for Harry and Markle, which included the UK High Court ruling against Harry in his privacy case against the Daily Mail. Around the same time, royal author Tom Bower offered a pointed assessment of Harry's impact on the monarchy's popularity: “The man is poison for the monarchy, and I think all the damage he and Meghan have done over the last 5 years, yes, there was again more damage, and the monarchy's popularity has fallen," Express UK reported.

Bower believes the Duke's presence in the UK has gone against the royal family. "It needs to rebuild its popularity and rebuild its respect for people. And Harry's presence in Britain just undermines that effort," he added. Previously, the Sussexes have managed to create a sympathetic narrative about themselves by giving controversial interviews, tainting the royal family.

However, the King has been generous throughout, leaving Prince William livid, who wants to allegedly strip the titles of the non-working royals. Despite openly blaming his loved ones in his memoir Spare, Prince Harry continues to make bold statements about his relationships and ties within the royal fold. Recently, while appearing on former England rugby star Joe Marler's podcast, Joe Marler Will See You Now, the Duke courted fresh criticism for labeling himself  'Prince of England', Sky News reported. This stands in complete contrast to his current position, since he stepped down from royal duties in 2020.

Meanwhile, rumors are rife that the Sussexes are facing a severe financial crunch, with their brand suffering major blows back in the US. Along with this, Harry now faces steep legal fees to cover after the defeat in the landmark case. The meeting with the King was significant, but has Harry learned from his past mistakes? Only time will tell.
