Meghan Markle Eyes Redemption With Intense New Netflix Drama Tied to Harry’s Military Past
Prince Harry and Meghan are betting big on a new Afghanistan war film as questions continue to rise about their Netflix future.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are back again with a new project, hoping against hope that this one works out. After a series of hits and misses with Netflix, the royal couple is now eyeing redemption with an emotional war movie. Based on the memoir titled No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege, written by British Major Adam Jowett, the upcoming project taps into Harry’s own military past.
Harry and Markle, alongside Tracy Ryerson, will be producing the film under the Archewell Productions banner. Netflix has also confirmed that Oscar-nominated writer of Bridge of Spies fame Matt Charman is heading the screenplay. The story follows Easy Company, a group of paratroopers and Royal Irish Rangers sent to hold a district in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province during the summer of 2006. Jowett was leading the troop during the mission.
According to Deadline, the movie is being compared to intense war dramas like Black Hawk Down and The Bridge on the River Kwai. It is also said to be especially meaningful for Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan, including some time in Helmand Province.
The upcoming war movie is not the only project the Duke and Duchess are currently working on with Netflix. They are producing a movie adaptation of The Wedding Date, with writer Tracey Oliver attached, and are still developing a screen version of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel Meet Me at the Lake. Moreover, the couple is reportedly also working on a scripted Polo drama for Netflix. The series is being written by Francisca X. Hu and produced alongside Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage’s company, Fake Empire.
Following the infamous exit of Harry and Markle from the Royal Family back in 2020 and subsequent move to California, they kicked off a new chapter of their life with a Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, which blew up instantly. The massive success led them to sign a five-year deal with the streaming giant, reportedly worth around $100 million. But unfortunately, the subsequent projects did not experience success similar to the initial one. When the term of the deal came to an end, it was not renewed in the same expansive form but scaled down to a “first-look” deal.
There were also multiple reports that the relationship between the streaming platform and the royals had soured over time. However, the new deal, along with many other projects lined up, says otherwise. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria, also pushed back on the rumors earlier this year. She assured that the streamer still maintains a relationship with the couple, and multiple projects are in development. Bajaria explained, “Deals come and go all the time, and we don’t renew so many deals; those just don’t get as much press for obvious reasons. There’s no juicy story there.”
