Meghan Markle Didn't Want Royal Titles For Her Kids — Until These Two Royals Changed Her Mind

The Sussexes reached the 'tipping point' regarding titles and made a U-turn after assessing the challenges.

Meghan Markle initially had apprehensions about claiming royal titles for her children. She had famously explained her concerns during the Oprah interview in 2021, highlighting that her son Prince Archie's title became contentious towards the end of her pregnancy. She stated that decisions about whether he would be a prince or a princess were taken out of her hands, citing royal protocol and a lack of security arrangements. Markle indicated that Prince Harry learned of these decisions through family conversations, Vanity Fair reported at the time. However, two royals influenced the Sussexes to change their minds, and the Duke and the Duchess agreed that it was 'their children's birthright.'

According to The Express UK, while announcing the christening of their daughter, Princess Lilibet, in California, the Sussexes expressed a desire for their children to adopt royal titles, even though they can no longer use the HRH titles. The reason behind this major decision was Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Reportedly, Markle was clearly influenced by the York sisters after an in-depth conversation and decided to retain the titles.

British journalist Neil Sean seconded this while stating: "Harry and Meghan are very, very keen to cling onto those royal titles. After much deliberation, Meghan decided that the titles would be a good thing, not just for her but for both her children as well." He continued, “Meghan became very friendly with senior members of the monarchy, predominantly Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice."

The royal commentator further pointed out that the Duchess recognized the value of titles for gaining access to influential circles, which explains the desire to maintain them. When it comes to royal protocols and traditions, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet could have held princely titles since the beginning of King Charles' reign, according to the 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V.

Initially, they were ineligible as great-grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth II, but upon Charles becoming the monarch, they became grandchildren and qualified for the titles. According to The Express UK, there is another reason that the Sussexes reached the 'tipping point' when it came to titles. Back in 2021, Sean asserted that the proposed reduction in the number of working royals led the Sussexes to recognize their diminished position in the future of the British monarchy.

Sean discussed a heated conversation, speculated to involve Harry, Markle, or Charles, signaling a pivotal moment for their status in the British monarchy. Charles has sought to modernize the monarchy since the 1990s, focusing on a smaller group of royals, particularly those in direct line to the throne, such as Prince William and Prince George.

During the Sussexes' interview with Oprah Winfrey, they expressed confusion over their son Archie's title, as he was named Master Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, without any royal title, purportedly for a normal upbringing, although they claimed the decision was not theirs to make.
