Kate Middleton's Latest Outfit Choices Could Be Hiding a Subtle Message Amid Andrew's Arrest
Fashion expert says the Princess of Wales is using familiar wardrobe pieces to signal steadiness and restraint.
Following the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, Catherine, Princess of Wales, appears to have taken a more deliberate approach to her public wardrobe. Across her recent engagements, she has chosen to rewear familiar pieces rather than debut new outfits — a move believed to be carefully considered and carrying an intentional message.
Since Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest on February 19, Kate Middleton has stepped out four times, and each time she has chosen a piece that already existed in her wardrobe. Some of the coats, dresses, and separates date back as far as seven years. And according to fashion stylist Lisa Talbot, who spoke to The Daily Mail, that decision sends a subtle but clear message. “Rewearing subtly communicates steadiness and humility. It signals continuity, responsibility, and respect for the moment. In situations where public sensitivity is heightened, the most powerful style statement can often be restraint,” Talbot said.
She added: “At times when the wider Royal Family is under scrutiny, clothing becomes less about fashion and more about message. By choosing familiar pieces from her existing wardrobe, she removes any distraction and keeps the focus on her role and her work rather than what she's wearing.”
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested by Thames Valley Police on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office and held in custody following a raid on his new home in Sandringham. Middleton’s first appearance after the arrest was at the England vs Ireland Six Nations match at Allianz Stadium, where she attended as patron of the Rugby Football Union.
She wore a cobalt blue Alexander McQueen coat that she had previously debuted on Christmas Day in 2023 and again in December 2025. The next evening, she and Prince William attended the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall. And in there, too, Middleton recycled her old Gucci gown, first worn in 2019.
She paired the chiffon design with the Greville chandelier earrings, once belonging to Queen Elizabeth II and designed by Cartier. A few days later, at a Welsh community event ahead of St David’s Day, Middleto once again chose established favourites. She rewore a burgundy Alexander McQueen coat and merlot Gianvito Rossi boots previously seen during the 2024 Qatar state visit, pairing them with a ME+EM blouse and a CO pleated midi skirt. Her Kiki McDonough Citrine Cushion Drop earrings completed the look.
For her fourth appearance in less than two weeks, Middleton featured in a St David’s Day Instagram video filmed at Frogmore House. Speaking in Welsh alongside William and wearing daffodils, she opted for another rewear — a red houndstooth Alessandra Rich dress first seen at the 2021 reopening of the V&A Museum.
