Kate Middleton Kept the Family Waiting in the Car — and the Reason Says Everything About Her
Kate Middleton kept Prince William and their three kids waiting in the car as she spoke with an Olympian, and fans are loving her for it.
On Saturday, Kate Middleton and Prince William made a stop at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with their three kids, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The five of them attended the netball matches and track cycling events at the tournament. And while the family outing certainly made headlines, it was one sweet moment that caught the attention of royal fans, and it was of none other than the Princess of Wales.
There is a reason for Middleton’s massive popularity, and much of it has to do with the warmth and interest with which she interacts with everyone. At the Commonwealth Games recently, she was engrossed in a conversation with British Olympian Sir Chris Hoy outside the stadium. William and the kids climbed into the car, and their staff kept the door open for her. However, in a heartwarming move, the princess did not rush through her discussion with Hoy. Eventually, the staff member closed the car door and waited for Middleton, as did the rest of her family. And it was only after she had properly finished her conversation that she went back to the car. Hoy is currently undergoing cancer treatment, and the Princess of Wales might have found a similar ground to speak to him about. Watch the video here!
The interaction between Middleton and Hoy impressed royal fans, who praised the former for being respectful and not hurrying through it. "She is so genuinely engrossed in conversation that her only focus is the person to whom she’s speaking. I love her for that," one X user said, as another exclaimed, "Chatty Cathy!!" One user on X wrote, "What underpins the habit is kindness. And yes, her family, drivers and security personnel wait, but she's extending kindness to someone - its such an admirable trait," as another added, "She loves people". One X user commented, "you can tell the family are just so used to it "Let's sit in the car while she finishes chatting". Love it." Interestingly, this is not the first time that William and their children had to patiently wait for Middleton to finish her conversations.
In a 2016 interview, the then-Duchess of Cambridge revealed that the royal family often teased her for spending too much time “chatting” during walkabouts. She said, as per the Express, “I think there is a real art to walkabouts; everyone teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting, so I think I've still got to learn a little bit more and pick up a few more tips, I suppose.” During 2024 Christmas, William and their children had to wait as Middleton talked to the fans gathered at the Sandringham Estate. According to Marie Claire, she even joked, “I seem to have lost my family.”
The Princess of Wales is not known for giving many public speeches. “I find doing speeches nerve-racking,” she had told a guest after her first public speech in 2012, according to Vogue. However, in personal interactions, she lights up and tries to engage with as many people as she can. Her recent Commonwealth Games outing was proof enough.
Middleton and William were joined by Prince Edward and Duchess Sophie during the track cycling events on Saturday. The royals were sitting together in the gallery as the coveted tournament reached its penultimate day. The now-Duke and Duchess of Rothsay, as they are known in Scotland, were present when Glasgow hosted the Games last time as well, all the way back in 2014.
