Kate and William’s Valentine’s Day Photo Signals a New Era for the Royal Family

Royal expert says their openness shows how PDA was not common in the British monarchy until now.

For much of its modern history, the British monarchy has drawn a clear line between duty and emotion. And affection, when present, was rarely expressed. But now restraint appears to be evolving with the upcoming generation, and at the centre of that change are Prince William and Kate Middleton. And the most recent telling example is their Valentine’s Day photo, which the couple uploaded on their social media handles.

Sharing a previously unseen photograph to mark the occasion, the couple offered a glimpse of their relationship that felt natural. Writing for HELLO! Royal expert Emily Nash observed, “The image, which was shared alongside a Happy Valentine's Day message, shows that, unlike generations before them, they are leading the charge in demonstrating their love following a difficult year for the future Queen.”

The photograph was captured by Josh Sinner, and shows the pair outdoors in Norfolk’s countryside, near their home at Anmer Hall on the Sandringham estate. Nash argues that this openness is more than a stylistic change.“William and Kate's partnership and love story are central to the future of the monarchy, and they are not afraid to show their affection for one another,” she wrote.

That willingness to show affection publicly marks a departure from long-standing royal tradition. Nash added, “Traditionally, the royals have tended to avoid public displays of affection.” For decades, such gestures were considered unnecessary, even inappropriate. But William and Middleton have opted for a different approach. “…But William and Kate clearly mean the world to one another, so they are happy to celebrate their love story with the world,” Nash added.

Nash further pointed out that the couple’s openness did not emerge overnight, but has been a consistent thread throughout their relationship. “Over the years, William and Kate have always made their feelings clear for one another, even more so amid the Princess's recovery from cancer over the past year. But there were signals from early in their relationship that they were going to do things differently.”

This is far from the first time the Prince and Princess of Wales have allowed the public a glimpse of their affection, both in person and online. During US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK, the couple shared a photograph on Instagram taken outside Windsor Castle in near darkness following a state banquet. The image, which was reportedly captured after the formalities had concluded, showed a softer, more personal moment.

Such gestures stand out because they diverge from long-established royal custom. Traditionally, members of the Royal Family maintain a measured physical distance while on duty. Emily Nash has previously explained the logic behind this convention. Speaking to HELLO!, she said, "They are almost always seen in photographs taken during official engagements, so they are at 'work' and it would be unprofessional to hold hands. They also need to shake hands with a huge number of people as they meet them, so aside from being on duty, it wouldn't be very practical!"
