Harry and Meghan Reportedly ‘Furious’ as Charles Wipes Out Last Traces of Their Wedding Gift
The Sussexes' $3 million Frogmore Cottage renovations now face reversal, as the Palace moves to wipe away traces of their time there.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were over the moon when Queen Elizabeth gifted them Frogmore Cottage and the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex as their wedding present in 2018. Not long after, the couple invested an estimated $3.3 million in renovating the property as their family home. Although they were formally evicted three years ago, sources claim the Sussexes are upset by the Crown Estate's plans to reverse their renovations, removing renovations closely associated with the Sussexes' time at Frogmore Cottage.
Speaking to The Daily Beast, royal expert Tom Sykes revealed that he had spoken to insiders who alleged Harry and Markle were furious and were splitting hairs over the fate of their former royal home. The luxurious estate just half a mile from Prince William and Princess Kate's Adelaide Cottage home has been sitting empty since the Sussexes moved to the US. On that note, Sykes believed they would still have had access to the Cottage had they not publicly demeaned the institution after their 2020 exit. He penned, "[If] they [Harry and Markle] hadn't gone public with all their resentments, they hadn't made all the films, they hadn't written the books, they hadn't called the royal family racist."
Moving on, the royal expert suggested that had the Queen been alive, Harry and Markle's eviction would have never seen the light of day. He continued, "What the Sussex side is telling me now is that King Charles waited until after the Queen had died to kick Harry out. And they say that the Queen would have blocked it because it was her wedding gift to them." He added, "At the same time, Harry was incredibly naive to think that the royal family would not pull every lever they could, yes, to punish him, or alternatively, to force him into exile."
For those unversed, a report in The Sun last week lifted the lid on the Crown Estate's alleged plans to erase traces of Harry and Markle from the residence. An insider spilled, "It's (Frogmore Cottage) been empty for three years. Even Andrew thought it wasn't good enough for him to move in. Maybe if they get rid of any trace of Harry and Meghan, then someone within the royal household will fancy it." The Sussexes' plush renovations reportedly included a private yoga studio, structural work involving new ceiling beams and floor joists, a complete rewiring of the property, and the installation of new gas and water systems. Harry and Megs may no longer call Frogmore Cottage home, but the reported plans suggest the property remains closely tied to debates about their place within the royal family years after their dramatic exit.
