Fergie’s Four-Word Nickname Might Reveal Where She’s Heading Next, Says Royal Expert
After being evicted from Royal Lodge, everyone is watching where Sarah Ferguson will head next. While her former husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, prepares to shift to a smaller residence on the Sandringham Estate, reports have suggested several locations for the former Duchess of York, even moving in with her daughter, Princess Eugenie, in Portugal. As speculation grows each passing day, royal commentators are once again revisiting an old moniker that may hold a clue about the direction she might take.
Royal journalist Richard Kay explained in Palace Confidential that Ferguson once found her strongest support far from the United Kingdom. "We used to call her the Duchess of New York because of the amount of time she spent on the east coast and they were very forgiving," he said. The journalist also noted that the nickname was rooted in experience rather than sentiment. "They gave her the opportunity, it was there that she became an ambassador for Weight Watchers, and it's where she, sort of, on previous occasions, got her life back together again, but I feel this time it's too late and too much has happened," he recalled.
The revival of this nickname comes at a moment when Ferguson is already having a tough time. With several charities distancing themselves from her this year, reports now also suggest that several American broadcasters and publishers are circling around her for a tell-all memoir or an interview. So, because of this, the possibility of a fresh start abroad no longer seems far-fetched, even as the idea creates real unease within the Palace, where some fear she could go ‘rogue’ with her disclosures. Kay, however, believes there would be global curiosity if she chose to relaunch herself overseas. "I think there would be enough curious people not just here but around the world. And she always had a lot of fans in the United States,” he said.
If a tell-all memoir or an interview is in fact on the horizon for Ferguson, some observers have issued a more cautious warning. Royal commentator Samara Gill suggested that while a chance to speak her story openly may be tempting for Ferguson, it can also open a can of worms for the wider royal family. Speaking on The Sun’s Royal podcast, she opined, "I think it's not right that she is going to speak out, but I think she will. Should she? I mean, she needs the money, she needs the cash, it's as simple as that.” Gill also noted that the stakes are unusually high, as the former Duke and Duchess of York “have absolutely nothing to lose at this point.”
Gill warned that with six-figure offers reportedly on the table, it is almost impossible to predict whose “dirty laundry” might be aired, adding, "I don't know think it'll be their own but think that because of the big amounts of money, you know I mean six-figure sums that are being thrown around for this interview, who knows who she'll talk about?" So, as speculation continues to swirl about Ferguson, the four-word nickname ― The Duchess of New York ― has taken on a fresh weight. And with her next steps still anyone’s guess, many believe it may be the best (read: closest) clue to where she plans to land next.
