Duchess Sophie Raises Eyebrows at Ascot With Outfit That Breaks Major Fashion Rule — Photos
There was no missing the fact that Duchess Sophie recently broke a major royal protocol. But what did she do?
The Duchess of Edinburgh has long been regarded as the monarchy’s dependable secret weapon, celebrated for her discreet work ethic and close ties to the rest of the family. Nevertheless, even the most dutiful royals occasionally break tradition. During a recent outing at the Royal Ascot with Prince Edward, Duchess Sophie—despite her elegant appearance—managed to violate a major royal protocol. What was her mistake?
On the second day of the Royal Ascot, Sophie donned a black 'Victoria Shirt Dress' from Suzannah London. The ensemble featured puffy-sleeved detailing with a large bow and a buttoned bodice accentuating an A-line pattern. She paired the outfit with a structured black and white hat with an encrusted floral motif and was carrying a Sophie Habsburg clutch with Jimmy Choo heels. While she was not breaking any Ascot dress code, the color of the outfit was a major issue.
Traditionally, black is considered an inappropriate choice for senior royals attending daytime celebratory events, as the color has long been associated with mourning, funerals, and formal black-tie engagements. Royal Ascot's official dress code focuses on hem lengths, sleeve styles, necklines, and headwear, all of which Sophie's outfit complied with. However, royal fashion etiquette extends beyond the written rulebook, making her all-black appearance a surprising departure from convention.
Interestingly, all senior members of the royal family are expected to travel with a black outfit at all times in case of a sudden royal death. As per HELLO!, the protocol dates back to 1952 when Princess Elizabeth was on a tour of Kenya and learned of her father, King George VI's, death. As she did not have suitable mourning attire with her, black clothing had to be brought to her before she could disembark her flight back in Britain.
With all its flaws, the outfit also made Sophie stand out among the sea of vibrant summer colors typically seen at Ascot. Unlike her, most royal ladies opted for brighter seasonal shades, including Princess Kate, who wore a lime yellow custom Roksanda "Brigitte" dress. All being said, Sophie's appearance was largely seen as a subtle fashion statement rather than a serious breach of protocol. The Duchess has increasingly experimented with contemporary styling choices in recent years, and her decision to wear black at one of Britain's most celebrated summer social events proved that even the monarchy's most dependable royal can occasionally bend tradition.
Sophie is not the first to rebel, as back in 1981, Princess Diana also wore a black David and Elizabeth Emanuel gown to a fundraising concert. Even back then, the royals had an issue with the outfit, as later on during a 1991 interview, Diana revealed that when King Charles saw the dress, he chided her, saying, "Only people in mourning wear black!"
