King Charles was a gracious host when he welcomed Donald and Melania Trump to Windsor Castle on September 17. The monarch treated the Presidential couple to an opulent state banquet dinner. Trump, clearly happy with the visit, later shared in a press conference that he had suggested a new nickname for Charles during his stay. However, he shared that the King swiftly shut down the cheeky moniker, much to his dismay.

While speaking at the American Cornerstone Institute Dinner, Trump revealed that he was fascinated with a controversial ruler. He shared that when an aide informed him that Windsor Castle had been built in the year 990, he was curious. He recounted, "Trying to figure that one out. 990? So it's like, you know, it's like really old... The name of the King at the time was William the Conqueror…he built this massive, massive castle, and he was known for winning wars." Taking inspiration from the Norman ruler, Trump suggested a new nickname for Charles. He shared, "I asked King Charles, ‘Why don't we call you Charles the Conqueror?’" The King reportedly replied, "No, I don't think so. I don't think so."

Despite the King’s lack of interest in the nickname, Trump praised Charles for his modern achievements, saying, "He's a great guy and he's doing a great job. An unbelievable job." The President also reflected on the history of the US as it approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026.

As for William the Conqueror’s history, he was a Norman ruler who invaded England in 1066 and beat Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Hastings. Later, he would conquer and establish many of the traditions and castles that survive today, including Windsor Castle.

Trump also sang Charles's praises at the state banquet dinner, appreciating his hospitable nature. He said, "This is truly one of the highest honors of my life." Speaking on the US and the UK's special relationship, he added, "The bond of kinship and identity between America and the United Kingdom is priceless and eternal. It's irreplaceable and unbreakable…Seen from American eyes, the word special does not begin to do it justice." Charles returned the favor in his speech, telling the President, "The United Kingdom was your partner in the first trade deal of your administration, Mr President, bringing jobs and growth to both our countries. And no doubt we can go even further as we build this new era of our partnership."

Following the successful state visit, a senior White House official confirmed to the BBC that Trump plans to invite Charles and Queen Camilla to the US soon. According to the official, the visit is being planned as a separate event from those celebrating the US's 250th anniversary celebrations. Trump has often spoken fondly of the UK, its culture, and the monarchy, and has described the King as his friend.
