Royal Expert Explains Why the Monarchy Will Have a Better King in Prince William: ‘He Is More…’

Prince William has long upheld an apolitical stance, following in the footsteps of his predecessors, King Charles and the late Queen Elizabeth. The Prince of Wales has hosted presidents from around the world with dignity and grace, cementing his position as future King through his conduct. Commenting on the same, royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams believes that William’s diplomatic and politically neutral 'reputation' will be vital in navigating an 'unprecedented era' in the monarchy.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Fitzwilliams explained that "he [William] has already established a reputation for diplomacy as the monarchy, both in the era of Queen Elizabeth and especially more recently in the unpredictable era of Donald Trump." The expert also noted that the Prince himself is eager to make his mark when he becomes King, which would include attempting to "modernize aspects of the monarchy, whilst maintaining relevant traditions which are valuable."

Fitzwilliams also believes that the Prince of Wales is enjoying far more success than Charles in promoting significant environmental issues. He opined, "His promotion of environmental issues is more relatable than the campaigning, admirable though it has been, of his father, who has given so many dire forecasts about the effects of climate change." Highlighting the Prince's demeanor at public events, the royal expert added, "William's more relaxed public appearances have delighted onlookers. His support of his beloved Aston Villa has led to numerous public appearances where his natural enthusiasm is on show." Fitzwilliams stressed that this 'reputation' and ability to interact with the people will become more important once he takes the throne.

Meanwhile, William himself has also shared his plans to modernize the monarchy once he becomes King. As reported by the Telegraph, shortly after his 2024 trip to South Africa, he told reporters, "I can only describe what I am trying to do, and that is I am trying to do it differently and I am trying to do it for my generation... to give you more understanding around it, I am doing it with maybe a smaller R in the royal, if you like." The Prince of Wales also admitted that he does not agree with the extravagance and stringent protocol associated with royal life. He continued, "I think we could do with some more empathetic leadership around the world."
William is also known for his strict work ethic while also prioritizing his three children with Middleton. Discussing his hands-on approach to managing the Duchy of Cornwall estate, his close aide William Bax told the Telegraph, "He is easy to follow because he has great conviction and personality, and he really wears his heart on his sleeve in terms of social interest and his desire to have a positive impact in the world."
