Royal Biographer Explains Why Reconciliation Between Charles and Harry 'Just Receded Further'

Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family has been fragile for years, but the prospect of a full reconciliation with his father, King Charles, may now be slipping further out of reach. Despite moments where Harry has voiced a desire to mend fences, insiders believe the window for such a reset is narrowing—and perhaps closing altogether. Royal biographer Robert Hardman argues that the hope of healing has “just receded further,” in his article for The Daily Mail.

The father–son relationship has been strained since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. While Harry has spoken publicly about wanting peace with his family, telling the BBC last year, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.” On the contrary, recent events suggest the divide is only widening.
Part of the challenge lies in the circumstances surrounding Harry’s life back in the UK. Earlier this year, he resigned from Sentebale, the Lesotho-based charity he co-founded, after trustees clashed with the chair of the board, Hardman wrote. Days later, he appeared in Britain for his ongoing legal battle with the Home Office over the removal of his automatic police protection. His presence in court, where he spent time “scribbling on Post-it notes and sipping water,” raised eyebrows. According to Hardman, members of the King’s team believed “he seemed to be pitch-rolling ahead of what was likely to be a humiliating court decision.”

Even then, the King extended an olive branch, offering Harry accommodation at Buckingham Palace. Yet Harry turned it down, opting instead for a hotel. A palace staff member noted, “Once again, he said no, presumably because the Palace is still so unsafe–and ended up staying in a hotel,” adding a hint of sarcasm given what followed, according to Hardman.
The tension deepened when Harry was asked about reconciliation. “I don’t know how much longer my father has – he won’t speak to me because of this security stuff, but it would be nice to reconcile,” Harry said. For many, the reference to the King’s health was seen as a careless misstep. Hardman mentioned, “Prospects for that, however, had just receded further. Within royal circles in Britain, some were ‘frankly appalled’ by his glib choice of words about the King’s health.”

However, recently, Harry and King Charles are said to be taking tentative steps toward reshaping their fractured relationship. Charles and Harry's aides were part of a private meeting, as reported by PEOPLE! Thereafter, according to reports, the Duke of Sussex had already agreed to share his official schedule with palace aides, an arrangement designed to avoid clashes with royal events and part of what has been described as a behind-the-scenes “peace summit” between Harry’s team and the King’s.
Now, fresh claims suggest that father and son could be preparing for a more personal step forward. With Harry due to return to the UK next month for his long-standing patronage with WellChild, insiders believe there is a real possibility of a face-to-face meeting. If it happens, it would mark the first direct engagement in months between the monarch and his youngest son.
