Princess Kate's Confession About Her Trooping the Color Return Revealed Just How Strong She Really Is
Her struggle was evident in an Instagram post right before the event, where she spoke about having 'good days and bad days'.
When Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, stepped onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace for the 2024 Trooping the Color, it was far more than a traditional royal appearance—it was a triumphant personal milestone in her cancer journey. Marking a public engagement since bravely sharing her diagnosis, the event was a comeback of sorts after a rigorous six months. However, behind the flawless public imagery lay the poignant reality of a future Queen navigating the grueling toll of chemotherapy, proving that even amidst the grandest traditions, her most inspiring act was simply following the late Queen Elizabeth's philosophy - a royal "has to be seen to be believed." However, royal author Christopher Andersen revealed that in the end, the ceremony took a toll on Kate's fragile health.
"Once the event was over and they returned to Adelaide Cottage, Kate collapsed from exhaustion," Anderson revealed in his book Kate!: The Courage, Grace, and Power of the Woman Who Will Be Queen." Unless they've been through it,' he claimed, the Princess of Wales said, "people don't realize how much chemo takes out of you. There's only so much you can do." Her struggle was evident in an Instagram post right before the event, where she spoke about having "good days and bad days". She confirmed about attending Trooping the Colour saying, "I’m looking forward to attending The King’s Birthday Parade this weekend with my family and hope to join a few public engagements over the summer, but equally knowing I am not out of the woods yet," however, in the same breath she added that her strength was limited.
She also expressed gratitude for the well-wishes and lauded Prince William for being of immense support during the challenging time. "I am learning how to be patient, especially with uncertainty. Taking each day as it comes, listening to my body, and allowing myself to take this much-needed time to heal," she said. Further, Andersen revealed a very important aspect of the outfit she wore that day. Her ensemble symbolized hope and resilience during her cancer recovery. She wore a striking white dress, representing rebirth and visibility. The upcycled Jenny Packham dress honored King Charles III while showcasing her eco-consciousness. A gold Irish Guards Regimental Brooch emphasized her dedication to her military role, and coordinated styling with her children underscored familial unity and strength, projecting an image of solidarity amidst public concern for their well-being.
Her health journey began with planned abdominal surgery in January 2024, after which she revealed her diagnosis and started preventive chemotherapy in March. By September, she had completed her treatments, which led to her remission announcement in January 2025 during a visit to The Royal Marsden Hospital. Currently, she is cancer-free, adjusting to her new normal, and has resumed her royal engagements while balancing family life with William and their three children.
