Princess Kate Quietly Breaks Royal Protocol for Elderly Cop Fulfilling His Late Wife’s Wish [Video]
Princess Catherine comforts George Cross hero Tony Gledhill after he fulfills his late wife's final wish at Buckingham Palace.
While Buckingham Palace’s Marble Hall is normally a space of historic reserve and strict protocol, it became the site of a deeply personal and moving display of human connection on April 21. Amidst the Royal Family’s tributes to the late Queen Elizabeth on what would have been her 100th birthday, Princess Catherine showcased her natural empathy by sharing a touching moment of grief and inner strength with an 88-year-old Tony Gledhill — a gesture that perfectly captured why the public holds her in such high regard.

Gledhill, who earned the George Cross during his time with the Metropolitan Police, was at the celebrations to fulfil a final and sacred promise. As the Princess made her way towards him, he shared that he had lost his wife recently; however, before she passed away, she had been adamant about his attending the late monarch’s centenary event. The heaviness of his wife’s last wish — and the fact that she was no longer there to see him fulfil it — was deeply evident as Gledhill and Catherine shared a quiet word. In a video captured at the reception — later shared by royal editor Rebecca English on X — the two can be seen holding each other’s arms, locked in a private conversation amidst the crowd.
The Princess of Wales bypassed the formal handshake expected of her station and instead reached out to wrap the widower in a close hug. This gesture, while striking to some royal observers, aligns perfectly with Catherine’s personal reputation. A friend of the Princess had previously shared with PEOPLE that the Princess is the type of person who will always opt for a hug when greeting someone, stating, “Kate's a big hugger. She is warm and friendly and greets everyone with a big hug and kiss. It comes naturally to her to be like that.”
Gledhill and Catherine’s interaction was a meeting of two different types of service. While the Princess of Wales mirrored the monarchy’s trajectory into the future, the retired police officer was a powerful reminder of Britain’s long history of heroism. His bravery was forged in 1966 when he and his partner, Terry McFall, engaged in a high-stakes pursuit of armed suspects in a harrowing chase that saw 15 shots fired directly at them. Although they were injured when the suspects attacked following a crash, the two successfully held the men down until backup reached them. Six decades later, his bravery was acknowledged not with formal protocol, but with an empathetic embrace from a future Queen.
This is not the first time that the Princess has gone out of her way to comfort someone. Since her own journey, Catherine has frequently connected with those in the cancer community, including a notable meeting with Jessie J, who faced her own breast cancer diagnosis. During the Royal Variety Performance in November 2025, the two shared a warm hug, with the singer later noting that she saw the Princess not just as a royal but as a fellow mother and survivor.
